Feedlot Water Troughs. What does the data say?

1. High Water temperature and poor hygiene reduces feedlot performance.
2. The greatest influence on water temperature is the temperature of the incoming water.
3. The ratio of sheep / trough influences water temperature. The more sheep drinking from a trough the lower the water temperature maintains as fresh water keeps flowing in.
4. Shade over the trough lowers water temp and reduces settling dust on the surface. Eliminating sunlight also reduces algal growth.

If sheep use the shade to sit around the trough, then there is not adequate shade elsewhere and the trough shade is poorly designed.

What works best?

🐑Keep inflow water at a low temperature. Trench the waterlines deep into cooler soil.
🐑Long narrow troughs with small water volume help assist cleaning and reduces wastage.
🐑Cover the trough with a small shade cover just enough to cover the troughs. Keep sunlight completely off the trough.
🐑Replace the water regularly to keep hygiene and temperature optimal. Depending on the time of year and conditions this could be three times per day.
🐑Position water troughs away from the feed source, including hay. Less fouling will occur.
🐑 Keep adequate shade throughout th pen to reduce sheep using the trough shade and blocking access.
