BOATING SAFETY ALERT
Boaters in the Jervis Bay area have been asked to double-check that their VHF radios are switched off as a matter of urgency.
A boat’s radio has been left on since early yesterday evening, meaning it has been transmitting non-stop for about the past 20 hours, which is interfering with VHF marine radio transmissions along the Illawarra coastline from Port Kembla to Ulladulla.
This is a public safety issue for boaters on these waters as the interference may mean radio operators at the Marine Rescue Jervis Bay radio base cannot hear distress calls or other contacts from other boaters.
This is particularly problematic if the boat with the radio switched on is sitting between the radio base and another boat in trouble.
Boaters are urged to check their radios as soon as possible.
