Have you ever thought of a successful e-commerce product idea? Are you ready to validate your market and launch your online store?

If that sounds like you, you need to source and develop your product. This is a critical step in the online selling process, and doing it right can make or break your business. However, when done poorly, not only can you not sell your product, but you can also end up with thousands of dollars worth of unsold, defective, or noncompliant inventory. There are many ways to search for manufacturers online, but you should be very careful. You don't want an unreliable or inexperienced supplier slowing your business down, turning an exciting and ambitious plan into an exhausting and frustrating obligation (rather than a lucrative endeavor).

[Identify Your Product]
The first step of course is to identify a product that you want to sell. Once this has been done, we advise running some market research on your competitors and identifying what they are doing well (and not so well!) in order to find out how you can quickly establish yourself as the leading brand for this type of product.

[Prepare A Brief]
Once you have understood the market for your product, you'll need to create a brief to provide to your supplier. Your brief should be as detailed and comprehensive as possible, including:
- Product specifications & drawings (including size, colours, features, materials etc.)
- The style of packaging required including labelling or customisation that you require
- Your desired quantity for them to produce or an overall inventory budget
Once this has been completed the crucial part is finding the right supplier.

[Types Of Product Sourcing]
Domestic Suppliers
Sourcing Companies / Agents
Manufacturers
Trading Companies
Supplier Marketplaces (eg. Alibaba)
Dropshipping
Wholesalers

If you are wanting to launch a winning eCommerce brand, then GenerationWatch does not recommend working with dropshipping or wholesale suppliers for these reasons:
Very low / no customisation ability which means no brand recognition and, no USP.

Wholesalers are selling the same product to everyone, and you are simply re-selling a product that many others are selling.
No control over quality.

Once you have decided on which direction you are going to go in for your product sourcing, the crucial next step is finding the right supplier.

[Finding Your Perfect Supplier]
You can find suppliers in 3 ways:
1. Finding a supplier domestically
2. Using a manufacturing marketplace like Alibaba (be careful)
3. Working with specialist agencies or agents that do the legwork & problem solving for you.

Finding domestic suppliers can be great for products that your country has strengths in manufacturing, and means you speak to them in your own language and are protected by your local consumer protection laws - something that international manufacturing does not provide.

If you can find domestic manufacturers for your products at workable prices, this should eliminate a portion of the inherent challenges of sourcing eCommerce products. This is a great option however, it can often be cost-prohibitive when comparing with the plethora of pricing options and flexibility from international suppliers.

Using platforms like Alibaba for research can be great, but can be very risky when wanting to find a manufacturing partner that you'll be putting everything on the line for, and sending thousands of dollars over to.

It is recommended for lower-risk ventures, where you plan to invest less than $10k, for example, and if that is lost you haven't risked your life savings.

You need to know who you can trust and who to steer clear of, and unfortunately, those marketplaces are not exactly designed for qualifying and screening quality factories - they profit from mass and scale and unfortunately finding a quality supplier on those platforms can be like finding a needle in a haystack.
If you're wanting to find and manage your suppliers directly, it can certainly be done, just prepare to be spending a lot of your upcoming time in eCommerce dealing with manufacturing challenges and less of your time marketing, selling, and building your brand.

On Alibaba for example, there are a higher proportion of "factories" that don't actually make, handle, or see the products that they sell, compared with actual factories. They are called 'Trading companies' and they are rife. Trading Companies are typically the reason that people have bad experiences with these platforms, because Trading Companies pose as factories but have zero experience with the products, mark them up heavily, make more mistakes, and often produce lower quality goods by switching factories behind the scenes try to make additional margins from your orders.

Sourcing agents, or sourcing companies like GenerationWatch, have a lot of experience developing products and know how to ensure you get your winning products developed and launched in the least amount of time, at your desired quality levels, with a lot of the common risks mitigated and managed for you.
If your sourcing agent is Western-Based, they'll be looking out for your best interests, steering you out of trouble and doing things the way the professionals do it. Think in terms of quality control, contractual terms, materials, packaging, freight management, payment terms, and exchange rate fluctuations.
Conversely, without a party dedicated to representing your interests, your manufacturer may not be looking out for your interests, but instead of course- their own.

One of the biggest benefits is that sourcing companies will have existing relationships with top tier manufacturers meaning that they can get your products made the right way the first time, and you stand to benefit from preferential lead timings and best-practice solutions for your manufacturing.

As sourcing agents and companies have feet on the ground who can visit your supplier, they should be checking and managing the quality of your products for each and every order. Meaning you know exactly what is coming every time you place an order, and they are there to grow with you as you scale and add more products to your range.

They should be able to do a lot of the heavy legwork for you and provide you with great samples for approval, leaving you to focus on what you do best.

[Where To From Here]
In summary, there are many ways to source your eCommerce products. It is vital to do your research and understand the pros and cons of each method, so you can find a solution that works for your risk appetite and your ambition trajectory to really scale.
If you are looking to start slow and to just 'dip a toe in' then Alibaba marketplaces might be the best place to start and learn product development through trial and error. If you are wanting to scale fast and spend your time building your brand whilst having a dependable, high value, & fast-moving supply chain, a sourcing company like GenerationWatch might likely be the best partner for your brand.

And of course if you can source your product domestically at the right combination of cost, volume, and customisation then that will naturally be the best option to source your product.
The best place to source products for your online store is definitely the one that fits with you and your business goals which will depend on many factors like time, budget, ambition etc.

If you are looking for a scalable supply chain or if you want complete control over design & production then get in touch with a GenerationWatch Brand Specialist today.

They say the best offense is a good defense, and that’s certainly true when it comes to managing your supply chains. You probably won’t get much advance notice about disruptions to your supply chain, so it’s a good idea to make sure you plan ahead for any eventuality.

With the current global supply chain delays, we do not expect freight rates to stabilize in the near term. The combination of a year of disruption, lack of containers, port congestions and a shortage of vessels in the right positions is creating a situation where cargo demand far exceeds available capacity.

Below are 7 strategies we always advise and help implement for our clients when preparing for supply chain disruptions:

1. Create a supply chain emergency plan
2. Build up inventory
3. Conduct a supply chain vulnerability audit
4. Identify backup suppliers
5. Diversify supply base
6. Partner with a sourcing company and logistics expert
7. Adopt risk evaluation tools

Manufacturers and shipping executives in Asia, the world’s factory floor, have a simple message on the global supply crunch: It’s going to get worse before it gets better.

Australia's economy is officially above pre-pandemic levels as surging levels of construction and business investment lift the nation's bottom line. GDP data shows 1.1 per cent bigger than at the start of the COVID pandemic.

Australia's economy bounces back from the COVID recession, growing by a much-better-than-expected 1.1 per cent over the past year thanks in part to government subsidies boosting key sectors.

Ever wondered what is the impact from the Suez Canal disaster to Australia? Most of Australia's trade goes to Asia, so it is not directly dependent on the Suez Canal. However, the global disruption of shipping will have an effect. The price of shipping has risen to its highest level in a year, and the price of oil briefly spiked too, as the Suez Canal carries a lot of the world’s oil, which now has to go the long way. If shipping costs more, that adds to the price of all our imported goods, which means higher prices on tins of Italian tomatoes, German cars and Japanese gaming consoles.

The recovery of the world’s wealth and welfare from the pandemic is newly at risk with news the MV EVER GIVEN is thoroughly wedged into the Suez Canal – and the major trade route could now be blocked for weeks.

Every year, we receive many questions regarding what to expect with your order during the Chinese New Year. Here is a guide on what to expect during this season.

Never has there been a more anticipated new year in modern history than 2021. The Christmas decorations seemed to make an early appearance as Australians looked forward to seeing out 2020 and ring in the new year with a fresh start. Soon after the new year resolutions have been cast aside, the Chinese New Year (CNY) will be upon us. If you’re an importer you’ll need to get busy long before the festivities begin.

Chinese New Year – Year of the Ox

The Chinese New Year falls on Friday, 12 February, 2021 this year. Each year the lead-up to Chinese New Year is chaotic. Importers around the world place orders to ensure they won’t run out of stock while their Chinese manufacturing suppliers are shut down.

Impact of Chinese New Year on Importers

CNY can cause headaches for importers but being organised can mitigate them.

Factory Shutdowns

Chinese New Year includes public holidays which give staff time off work to celebrate with family and friends. Almost every factory closes for seven days of public holidays but many factories remain closed for two to four weeks. Once factories reopen it can take them another two weeks to get back to full capacity as staff slowly return to work.

Importers should make contact with their manufacturers or import agent now to find out how long the factory will be closed. This allows importers to decide if they need to place an order to ensure they have enough stock to last. It’s most likely you won’t receive an order until March by the time the factory produces the goods after New Year and the shipment arrives in Australia.

Staff Movements

It’s not just the factory shutdown period that causes manufacturing delays. Factories can take many weeks to get back to peak production rates if they have lost skilled staff. The CNY period is notorious for staff not returning to their job. They may have received a better employment offer or decided to move and live in another region. Factories have no choice but to fill the vacant positions with untrained staff. Depending on the manufacturing process, it can take weeks or even months before new staff are proficient and the goods start moving out the door.

Shipping

Shipping prices work on supply and demand. The last quarter of the calendar year and January are the busiest for container ships. Between August and November, shipments of consumer goods leave China carrying goods for Christmas shopping. Between December and February, ships are filled with goods importers need to get through the factory shutdown period. During these months shipping rates increase as importers pay a shipping surcharge due to high demand.

This year the pandemic caused major shipping problems throughout the world. Some Chinese factories closed to reduce the spread of COVID-19. When they reopened and started manufacturing, there was a backlog of goods that needed to leave ‘the factory of the world’ China to all corners of the world. A shortage of shipping containers occurred and backlogs at ports.

It’s Not Just Chinese New Year - Other 2021 Holidays

Other Chinese public holidays can close factories for multiple days and cause manufacturing delays. While most Chinese public holiday dates are yet to be confirmed, the 2021 dates to be aware of include:

New Year’s Day - 1 January

Chinese New Year – Likely 11-17 February

Qingming Festival – Likely 4 April

Labour Day – Likely 1-3 May

Dragon Boat Festival – Likely 14-16 June

Mid-Autumn Festival – Likely 21 September

National Day of People’s Republic of China – Likely 1-3 Oct

Golden Week – 1-7 Oct
