Expecting nothing means not expecting or hoping anything will happen. When you don't expect anything, you protect yourself from disappointment, so whatever you do get or achieve is a pleasant surprise.

It's the same when you have employees working for you. Sometimes you don't expect them to do everything, but you'll be surprised by how far they've come.

So it's not always a bad thing to give something back in order for them to feel appreciated, and vice versa.
