Elkonin (sound) boxes are a beneficial manipulative that support students as they provide a visual scaffold for blending or segmenting.

When learners first start the process of segmenting the Elkonin boxes can be used to map each sound that is heard. The word should be pronounced slowly with each sound stretched. The number of sounds (phonemes) can then be counted and a dot or mark placed in each box.

As learning progresses the dots or marks can be replaced with the letters of each sound.

Magnetic letters reduce the additional mental load of handwriting the letters. Magnetic digraphs help learners to see the letter combination that make each sound.

As this early learning skills progresses handwriting the letters of each sound can be added too.
