We're giving back to the resources we use. Trees are an integral part of our business for the paper we print on, the wood we carve our stamps from and the books we read. For every item purchased, Fleur & Fable will plant one tree with our impact partner Eden Reforestation Projects! 10 items in your order = 10 trees. They work with local communities to restore forests on a worldwide scale, creating jobs and protecting ecosystems - We're aiming for 500 trees planted through them by the end of the year! Bookplate Bits: Woodcut

The woodcut printmaking technique is one of the oldest forms of 'relief' printmaking. It involves carving an image into a soft wood, like pear wood, where the recessed (negative) areas that are cut away don't retain any ink, while the raised (positive) areas do. An image can be transferred to the wood either by sketching directly onto the wood or using a graphite-backed paper. Once a design is set on, you can start to carve out areas using a chisel, gouge or knife. The woodblock is then carefully inked with a dauber or roller and is put through a printing press to transfer the design onto paper.

Historically, an artist who draws the woodcut design wouldn't necessarily be the one doing the carving - this was usually passed onto a master craftsperson who specialises in woodcutting.

I thought I'd share some woodcut bookplate examples from the Eirene Mort collection I've been digitising. More to come on this series!

All sourced from Japan, our Versafine Clair collection is a pigment, oil-based ink resulting in crisp and vibrant stamp impressions. Whereas our Memento (full sized and Dew Drop ink pads) are dye-based suitable for general use. All ink pads feature a raised surface for use with stamps of any size.

A different sort of post today, it's not often I reflect on the (financial) year but I told myself in last year I'd be more strategic in my financials, marketing and product development. It's been about a year and a half since launching and Fleur & Fable is my dream company, I absolutely love how it's progressing and everyone who's made this a reality (that's you!!). It's a complete reflection of my aesthetic, dreams and what I love to surround myself with. ⁠

It's weird trying to answer people who want me to justify why I've chosen to specialise in bookplates. What I want to do is innovate in this very very niche space, expand my bookplate empire and spread my love of art, history and books that's wrapped up in this tiny package of a bookplate. There's still so many different things I want to explore within bookplates!⁠

I've been so busy packing wholesale and stamp orders I haven't had time to do anything else!
But a little update: I got accepted into the Sydney Made markets () happening on July 16th inside Town Hall (!!) and also Finders Keepers at the Cutaway Barangaroo on July 29-31 () -- these are like my all time favourite markets so I'm SO glad I get to be back!

Fleur & Fable is all about reviving the lost tradition of using bookplates and I've made it my mission so that F&F becomes a one-stop shop for all things bookplates! From bookplate stickers, stamps, library catalogue cards, ink pads and the ability to custom print and personalise. I'm particularly scrupulous about the fact each Fleur & Fable bookplate and stamp is an ode to intricate design, historical techniques and modern production that aims to revive this 500+ year art form into everyday personal libraries.⁠

One thing I've always wanted to offer are bookplate embossers - the problem is they're just so clunky, metal and ugly I can't bring myself to offer it.⁠

William Morris once said 'have nothing in your house that you do not know to be beautiful or believe to be useful' and I'm really hoping that permeates my work. ⁠
