In the first week of July each year is national NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC Week celebrates and recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and is a great opportunity to learn about and celebrate First Nations history and culture.
This years theme Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! celebrates those who have driven and led change in the community and calls on a commitment for all to work for systemic change, for justice, for equity, for proper recognition and cooperative and collaborative reforms.
In our NAIDOC Week play we learnt about Aboriginal symbols and how these symbols are used for art and are a special way for Aboriginal stories to be told. We spoke about our Aboriginal peg dolls, about their different skin tones representing the many Indigenous people and their traditional dance and ceremonial clothes. Which led to lots of questions and our Welcome to Country, Ceremony & Finding Our Heart books helped us to learn about traditional ceremonies, language and more!
Our amazing resources used all were sourced from or by Indigenous artists and businesses:
