Did you know the chain on a children's swing isn't just any chain? πŸ™Œ

There's a specific reason playground chain exists as its own product category β€” and it comes down to something most people have never thought about. πŸ€”

Children's fingers are small enough to fit inside standard chain links. If a child's finger enters a link while the chain is moving or under load, that's an entrapment injury waiting to happen. πŸ”—

Playground chain is manufactured to specific link dimensions that keep the internal link opening outside the dangerous zone. When the chain is correctly specified, no plastic sheathing is needed. The chain itself is the safety solution. βœ…

It's used everywhere kids play β€” backyard swing sets, council parks, school playgrounds, childcare centres, climbing structures, rope bridges. And the same compliant chain applies whether it's a public park or a backyard.

πŸ“ Planning a wire balustrade and not sure how much wire or how many fittings to order? Here's some tips to help you get it right. 😬

πŸ“ Step 1 β€” Measure every bay
A bay is the span between two posts. Measure each one and write it down. Don't estimate.

🧡 Step 2 β€” Count your wire runs
One horizontal line of wire = one run. The number of runs depends on your balustrade height and required wire spacing. Multiply runs per bay Γ— number of bays = total runs.

πŸ”’ Step 3 β€” Calculate your wire
Each run needs the bay width + about 400mm for terminations. Add it all up, then add 10% wastage. That's your wire requirement.

πŸ“¦ Step 4 β€” Match to a kit
Here's what makes it easy β€” the number of turnbuckles in one of our kits = the number of runs it completes. One turnbuckle, one run. Choose the kit size that covers your run count with a small buffer, and make sure the wire included covers your calculation.

We stock 7 kit types to suit different finishes and post types.

Getting ready to put up a shade sail and staring at a pile of stainless fittings wondering what goes where? πŸ€”

The hardware is actually pretty logical once you know what each piece is for β€” and getting it right is what separates a sail that stays taut and looks great from one that sags after the first storm. πŸ‘‡

πŸ”© Eye Bolts & Pad Eyes β€” These are your anchor points. Fixed to the post, wall or structure, they're where everything starts.

πŸ”— D Shackles β€” The connecting link between your anchor point and the rest of the rigging. Simple, strong, and essential.

⛓️ Chain β€” A short length of chain at each corner gives you adjustment range at the anchor end. Invaluable when measurements don't work out exactly as planned.

πŸ”§ Turnbuckles β€” The tensioning device. Turn the barrel and you tighten the sail. Don't forget to lock the locking nuts once you've got the tension right.

πŸ” Carabiner Snap Hooks β€” Fast, secure connection at the sail corner. Great for seasonal installations where you want to take the sail down and put it back up without disturbing the rigging.

Learn More: chaindirect.com.au/shade-sail-hardware-explained

All of our shade sail hardware is Stainless Steel Marine Grade 316 β€” the same grade used in marine rigging. It won't rust, won't corrode, and won't let you down after a couple of summers in the Australian sun. β˜€οΈ

When did you last properly inspect your anchor chain? βš“

Not glanced at it as it came up. Actually laid it out and looked at every link. πŸ€”

For most boat owners, the anchor chain is the most overlooked piece of safety equipment on board β€” and a chain that looks fine from the helm can be hiding some serious problems at the link level. πŸ”

Here's what to look for:

πŸ”΄ Wear between links β€” grooves and flattening where the links have ground against each other over years of use.

πŸ”΄ Worn or damaged galvanising β€” the protective zinc coating wears away first at the bow roller and through the windlass. Once it's gone, bare steel and saltwater is a bad combination.

πŸ”΄ Rust β€” surface rust is a warning sign. Pitting and visible material loss means it's time for a replacement.

πŸ”΄ Bent or deformed links β€” a sign the chain has copped a shock load at some point. Don't trust a bent link, regardless of how the rest of the chain looks.

The off-season is the perfect time to pull it all out, go through it link by link, give it a good freshwater scrub, clean out the anchor locker, and make an honest call on what you've got. βœ…

Did you know the colour of your safety chain is communicating to your workers before they've even had time to think? 🧠

There's genuine psychology behind why yellow-and-black triggers a caution response ⚠️, why red-and-white signals restricted access 🚫, and why using the wrong colour for the wrong application quietly erodes the effectiveness of your entire site safety system. 😬

It's not just about visibility πŸ‘οΈ It's about what the human brain does with colour in the fraction of a second before conscious thought kicks in β€” and how smart WHS systems are designed to use exactly that. 🎯

D shackle or bow shackle? πŸ€” They look pretty similar at first glance β€” but grab the wrong one and you've got a connection that's working against itself.

Here's the difference:

πŸ”΅ D Shackles have a narrow, D-shaped body. They're built for clean, straight, in-line connections β€” joining two chain lengths end-to-end, attaching a chain to a ring bolt, connecting a trailer safety chain. Load runs straight through, everything stays aligned. Simple and solid.

🟠 Bow Shackles have a wider, rounder body β€” like a padlock shape. That extra room inside the bow means they can handle loads coming from multiple directions without putting uneven stress on the pin. Shade sail corners, rope-to-anchor connections, mooring applications, pulley systems β€” anywhere the load direction might shift, the bow shackle handles it better.

The other decisions to make:

πŸ’§ Zinc plated β€” great for dry, sheltered, or indoor applications. Economical and strong.
🌊 Stainless Steel G316 β€” the sensible choice for marine, coastal, poolside, or permanently outdoor use.
πŸ“‹ Rated (Grade S) β€” carries a stamped working load limit on the body. Worth it when you want documented capacity or compliance.

Both types are available in 5mm through to 12mm, so there's a size for everything from light DIY rigging to heavy-duty connecting.

Ordering wire rope and not sure whether to get a 50m, 100m, 200m or 305m roll? Here's the thing most people get wrong β€” they measure the job, order exactly that length, and end up short. πŸ“

Here's how to get it right:

πŸ”’ Step 1 β€” Map your runs: Count every wire span and multiply by the number of horizontal runs you need.

πŸ”© Step 2 β€” Add termination allowance: Every wire end that gets swaged or fitted consumes around 200mm of wire. With two ends per run, that's 400mm per run disappearing into fittings alone.

βž• Step 3 β€” Add 10% wastage: Real jobs don't go exactly to plan. Wires get re-cut. Runs measure up differently once posts are in. 10% buffer = peace of mind.

πŸ’° Leftover stainless steel wire rope isn't wasted β€” it doesn't rust, doesn't degrade, and will be sitting ready in the shed for the next job, a trellis, a clothesline, or a repair.

You've bought the ball chain, and now you're staring at a fittings page trying to work out if you need a connector or a clip β€” and whether they're even different things. 😀

They are. And once you know the difference, the whole thing makes perfect sense.

Ball chain connectors join two ends of chain together πŸ”— perfect for forming a loop or closing off a length into a continuous ring. Think custom keyrings, chain necklaces, decorative craft loops.

Ball chain clips anchor the end of the chain to a surface using a screw πŸ“Œ this is how pen tethers, sink plug chains, and fixed anchor points are done.

Some projects need both. Either way, the key rules are simple:

βœ… Match the fitting size to your chain size β€” 2.4mm, 3.2mm, or 4.0mm
βœ… Match the finish β€” gold brass, silver nickel, or stainless steel
βœ… Going near water? Go stainless steel every time

And if you're replacing an old sink plug chain, making a custom dog tag lanyard, tethering a pen to a counter, or working on a craft project β€” the same rules apply. Get the size right, match the finish, and the rest is easy.

We stock ball chain connectors and clips in all three sizes and finishes, available online with Australia-wide shipping.

Replacing swing chains or building a backyard play set? πŸ”— Choosing the right chain isn’t just about strength β€” it’s about how it handles weather, how it looks over time, and how much maintenance you’ll be doing. πŸ›

Here’s the simple comparison:

Hot dipped galvanised chain is the practical, great-value choice for most inland backyard installs. βœ… It suits classic play sets and handles everyday outdoor exposure well.

316 stainless is the upgrade for coastal and high-exposure areas. 🌊 It’s far more corrosion resistant in salty air and tends to keep a cleaner, β€œnew build” look for longer.

Both need basic inspection over time (because swings move and wear points are real), but if you’re near the ocean, stainless is usually worth it.

Twisted coil chain is one of those β€œkeep it in the storeroom” essentials.πŸ‘Œ

It’s a weldless chain, meaning the links are secured by machine twisting/bending, not welding β€” which makes it light, flexible and easy to work with for everyday facility jobs. βœ…

In practical terms, it’s great for hanging signage, suspending light items, quick organisation tasks, and tidy DIY-style fixes around warehouses and sites. 🧰

Our twisted coil chain is zinc plated for solid corrosion resistance, and it’s available in handy 5m packs or 30m rolls β€” perfect for one-off jobs or keeping stock on hand for ongoing maintenance. βš™οΈ
