Simply fabulous! Almost flawless restored vintage Pioneer Stereo Amplifier model SA8800 circa 1979.

What a classic example of late 1970’s Golden Era HiFi! From Pioneers’ stunning Blue Line series. Check out how the lights sparkle off the beautifully machined alloy k***s.

Famous or for its “Non Switching” Circuitry which resulted in very low distortion over coming some of the limitations of traditional Class A & Class B designs. Resulting in the remarkable figures of .005% THD & .002 IMD. Super impressive! Low distortion figures don’t always mean great sound, however the SA8800 definitely delivers in sound quality! An extremely wide frequency response means, with the right speakers you can get the most out of your audiophile records & compact discs.

This meant the SA8800 was ahead of its time, compact discs were still a couple of years away & one of the key advantages of CD’s was their extended frequency response. With the SA8800 you were “future proofing”.

Also with this series Pioneer introduced Fluoroscan meters, forerunners to the upcoming LED which became very common throughout the 1980’s & onwards.

Without question a very desirable vintage amplifier which would make a great centre piece in a high quality HiFi system.

As always this beauty has been professionally serviced, then cleaned & detailed.

Sold with 6 months warranty.

Some of you asked, so what did the big Sansui combination sound like?

There is nothing like a big 350 watts per channel power amp to get the Cerwin Vega’s 4 x 15” woofers moving! A bit like using a sledge hammer to drive in tacks!

It is shame we cannot see sound waves because I have no doubt there was an enormous amount of air being shifted when those big cones started moving.

Sadly the devices we are using to listen to these videos on cannot fully convey the wall of sound, the wide sound stage & depth of bass we were experiencing standing in front of this fabulous combination.

Just like having your own full blown dance concert in your lounge room!

Already sold! Legendary Sansui TU-9900 tuner, CA-3000 Pre amplifier & BA-5000 Power Amplifier!

Sansui’s finest! The biggest & heaviest “combo” we have had in our shop! Makes our Accuphase “combo” look small by comparison, which it really isn’t when you see it in person.

Super rare in Australia this Top Of the Line combination didn’t last long. A repeat customer pounced as soon as I told him what we had for him.

It took us awhile to get each component serviced, then cleaned & detailed. We brought them in on Saturday & our customer came in & picked it all up later in the day. Not before we had a bit of fun.

Comparing 350 watts per channel versus 150 watts per channel (no not at full volume) produced by our highly capable Accuphase P300 the Sansui combo seemed to be more effortless, more dynamic at lower levels. Most noticeable through our big Cerwin Vega’s & AR9’s. Not surprising considering both these pairs of speakers can go below 30Hz.

I didn’t keep this set because trying to move the 49 kg power amplifier around was quite a challenge…..actually the real truth is, they didn’t have enough meters😂

In return we have back traded a superb TOTL Rotel RA-1412 which we previously sold to him & will need a check over by one of our techs before it will be ready for sale.

Now for something complete different.

A year ago co owner Sheree was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent an operation to have the cancerous lump removed then commenced treatment to keep her cancer free. Initially Radiology & then 2 tablets. The second being a replacement for chemotherapy.

Sheree’s brilliant Oncologist asked her if she would like to partake in a ground breaking Optima Clinical Trial to see if she could avoid chemotherapy. She had a 1 in 4 chance. Trial results came back with great news, no chemotherapy & instead take a tablet for 2 years. The tablet has side affects but not as bad as chemo can be.

The key take away is now there is another option for people diagnosed wth certain types of breast cancer.

This weekend in Chicago a conference was held where the final findings were delivered. The local PR representative had contacted the Oncologist asking to speak to someone who had participated in the Trial. So on Thursday the PR lady introduces herself to Sheree, asking about how she is feeling, her experience with tablet & side effects. The PR lady was hoping that the outcome of the Chicago conference would be picked up by local media. Impressed with the meticulous notes Sheree had kept she then asked Sheree, would you be happy to talk to local media if indeed they do pick up the story?.

So here we are, on our way to work yesterday (Sunday) & we get the call. It is going to happen & they want to talk to you today! So about 1.5 hours after the initial call Channel 9 are in our shop & the story is being told.

First thoughts after receiving the channel 9 confirmation call were, how does my hair look? What is my make up like? I should have worn a different top, I don’t have my notes…..🤯

Normal transmission will resume next post……..

**SOLD**
Restored vintage Marantz Turntable model 6300. The best you will find anywhere!

This is an exceptional example of a highly desirable model, made even better with the work we have carried out.

NEW Old Stock motor & speed calibration pots fitted & more! With original owners manual too!

We picked this up recently from the original owner less than 15 kms from our shop. It was untested until our tech turned it on. His observations were not good.

“Motor going “back & forth”, tone arm loose & not always cueing.” So basically it was not speed stable.

He recapped the power supply which helped but didn’t completely fix the unstable speed issue. With the help of another 6300 he was able to confirm the motor had problems. Normally this would mean the turntable is a “write off”, however he was able to find an original New Old Stock motor in Europe. We hit jackpot here.

The new motor was fitted & the rest of the service was completed.

Including fitting new speed control pots.
Fitting 2 x new micro switches.
Adjusted & tightened tone arm.
Cleaned mech including “stop & “go”.
Adjusted/calibrated motor speeds.
New earth terminal.
New RCA leads.
New power lead.
New VM95SH Shibata stylus & cartridge.

Once back in our hands we cleaned, detailed, re oiled the plinth, polished the lid & finally set up the tonearm.

There you have it, with the new motor & full service this 6300 will outlast every other 6300 out there. Sold definitely the best you will find!

Sold with 6 months warranty.

Now to see if he can fix a 6350 with a bad motor that we have had in storage for a few years🤞🏻

Yes a bit different! Yes we repair/service GEC Weltron’s as per this customer owned example .

An extensive amount of work went into this one. Our Electronics Engineer serviced the main unit including fitting LED’s to replace the standard globes. Everything now works as it should, turntable, cassette deck, tuner etc.

I tackled the speakers, hoping a simple re cap would suffice but no everything that could be wrong was wrong!

Out of the 4 drivers only 1 tweeter worked! Five of the front baffle mounts had broken off the cabinet body, the RCA speaker connectors were damaged so had to be replaced. Some front baffle bolts were missing.

Replacing the drivers was a real challenge because the amplifier in this unit only puts out about 10 watts per channel, so efficient, high sensitivity drivers were critical. Ideally the screw holes had to line up with the existing ones. Equally important, they had to look original so no non period correct yellow Kevlar coned drivers in here!

Most new replacements are aimed at HiFi level sound quality & with higher power handling, typically being driven by more powerful amplifiers. In this situation high sensitivity is not as critical. Fortunately I found a pair of used period woofers in our spares stocks then managed to find a new pair of tweeters similar in spec & size to the originals. The RCA terminals were upgraded with banana plug types. The busted off mounts were re glued in place. While I was at it the caps were replaced & internal wires upgraded. Missing bolts replaced.

No longer original but now working properly & sounding better than any non serviced/repaired versions. Only a Weltron expert would pick that the speakers now had different drivers.

I spent more time on this pair of speakers than I have on some more desirable HiFi speakers. However the value of a restored complete Weltron unit justifies the effort, especially since this unit has been with its owner since he bought it new in the mid 1970’s!

A local business owner came in with a high end Thorens turntable. She was in a bit of a fluster, being somewhat of a beginner with vinyl the complexity of the Thorens was frustrating her. She wasn’t comfortable with the plinth movement due to the suspension, the full manual operation & the spindly “fragile” looking arm.

She actually asked for the factory arm to be replaced!

I wasn’t in the day she came in & when I was told about this I thought, “this is odd, never had a request like this in the past”. Before I was able to call her to get the full story she came in & after some discussion to clarify exactly what she wanted her response was “I just want a really nice turntable that looks fantastic & is easy for me & my daughters to be able to use”.

So after some thought I suggested a fully automatic model, discuss some options & then realised we had this PD277 model in storage. She liked the idea of full automatic functionality, just press one button & up the arm lifts moves over to the record & then down. It couldn’t be easier.

She loved the style of this Luxman, so we did a deal on the Thorens, then the Luxman was off to the tech for the usual full service.

Cleaned & detailed including an in depth lid polish, the “after” result is one fabulous looking turntable. Yes that point would have more impact with some “before” shots🤦🏻

Picked up last weekend & am very happy to say she was really pleased with her new Luxman!

One day we will get the Thorens in the shop…..

Our store hours are Friday - Sunday & many visitors ask “so what do you do the rest of the days”?

This!

Restoration including repairing, cleaning, detailing, polishing, painting, testing, re foaming, re capping speakers, building speaker frames, replacing speaker cloth, re oiling veneers, fitting new turntable lids, picking up stock, unloading & sorting stock, visiting technicians & more.

Many jobs we just can’t do in the shop, either time wise, are too messy or we need more space to spread out.

Today we detailed this endgame high end Sansui which will be heading off to its new home on Saturday. I am hoping to set it up before the new owner arrives so we can have a good listen before it goes. Also started on this stunning Marantz turntable, not quite finished yet, need to deep polish the lid, set the arm up & then it will go on the shelf on Saturday…….
