It's one of the most common questions we get asked, and the honest answer is: it depends what you're watering.

Impact sprinklers use a spring-loaded arm that flicks back and forth to rotate the head. They're simple, tough, affordable and cope well with hard or bore water — ideal for pasture, grazing land, horse arenas and turf where a little unevenness doesn't cost you anything.

Gear drive sprinklers use an internal turbine and gear train for smooth, continuous rotation — no flicking, no steps in coverage. They perform well at lower pressure and put water more precisely where it's needed. This makes them the better choice for sensitive crops, high-value horticulture and large-scale dust suppression or mining applications where even coverage really matters.
