I guess its time to have the fake strings talk again.

A customer brought in a packet of strings they'd purchased online only to have half of them break within a week. Plenty of people buy guitar strings online thinking they're getting a great deal on a premium quality item for half the price. They're not.

What they get is a cheap, inferior product that sounds bad, feels worse, has sharp edges and rusts or breaks quickly. This can happen even from big, well known sites.

The fake pack on the left is noticeably duller, with thinner packaging, and larger serrations on the top and creases down the side. The fonts and spacing will also often be off and the artist lists on the back out of date and order. The strings themselves will often have windings that come undone, and ball ends with sharp edges not to mention just looking and feeling cheap. Unless you handle the real packets every day, or you can compare them side by side, it's very easy to be fooled.

This is why its important to purchase your strings and other musical accessories from authorised dealers with a brick and mortar store.
