Let’s talk about Flying V’s
This design , originally conceived and designed by Gibson in 1958 , was the company’s attempt at modernising the brand and image . Initially, a slow seller , it found its way into the hands of musicians like Albert King , Lonnie Mack , and then later in the 60’s by Ray Davies of the Kinks .
Jimi Hendrix played a Flying V extensively between 1967 -69 .
It is said that fewer than 100 were ever made during the original Run 1958-59
and a few made in 1963 from left over parts.

So

Here’s a sneak peek at a Cargill Custom V we’re building .
Using Ash for the body with a beautiful Birds Eye maple top , this beauty has a belly cut to facilitate easier handling and comfort. This is most definitely going to be fitted with Humbuckers with traditional switching, volume and tone positioning. Jack plug won’t be top mounted . Keep your eyes on this beautiful instrument as we progress through its build .

Cargill Microtonal Guitar Necks: Redefining Musical Expression

Microtonality—the use of intervals smaller than the conventional semitone—has long fascinated musicians, composers, and instrument makers seeking to expand the sonic palette of the guitar. Among the pioneers exploring this frontier is Cargill, introducing Microtonal Guitar Necks that allow players to access a broader spectrum of pitches, scales, and expressive possibilities.

What Are Microtonal Guitar Necks?

Traditional guitars are tuned and fretted according to the standard Western chromatic scale, which divides an octave into 12 equal parts (semitones). Microtonal guitar necks, however, are designed to incorporate additional frets, alternative fret layouts, or adjustable fret systems that enable players to access pitches between the standard semitones.

Cargill's microtonal necks are engineered to facilitate precise intonation for alternative tuning systems, just intonation, or custom scales—opening up new avenues for musical creativity.

The Innovation Behind Cargill Microtonal Necks

Cargill’s approach to microtonal guitar necks emphasizes precision, flexibility, and playability:

Custom Fret Layouts:** Using advanced CNC machining and innovative fret placement, Cargill designs necks with extra frets or alternative fret positions tailored to specific microtonal scales.

Material and Construction: Utilizing high-quality woods and durable hardware ensures that the microtonal features do not compromise the instrument’s stability or tone.

Benefits for Musicians

The advent of microtonal guitar necks offers numerous advantages:

Expanded Tonal Palette ; Access to pitches outside the standard 12-tone equal temperament enables exploration of traditional, folk, and experimental scales.
Enhanced Expressiveness:** Microtonality allows for subtle emotional nuances and unique melodic expressions.
Innovative Composition: Composers and improvisers can craft new musical language, blending genres and creating novel soundscapes.
Cultural Exploration:** Microtonal instruments facilitate authentic performances of non-Western musical traditions that use alternative tuning systems.

Applications and Use Cases

Cargill’s microtonal guitar necks are popular among:

Experimental and Avant-Garde Musicians:** Pushing the boundaries of sound.
Ethnomusicologists and World Music Artists:** Recreating traditional scales and modes.
Composers:** Writing microtonal pieces with precise pitch control.
Educators:** Teaching alternative tuning systems and musical diversity.

Challenges and Considerations

While microtonal guitar necks offer exciting possibilities, there are some challenges:

Learning Curve:** Musicians need to familiarize themselves with new scales and fretboard layouts.
Limited Standardization:** Custom or specialized fret arrangements may require bespoke setups and maintenance.

Conclusion

Cargill’s Microtonal Guitar Necks are transforming the landscape of guitar playing by making microtonality accessible and practical. They empower musicians to explore new sonic worlds, deepen their expressive range, and expand the horizons of musical composition. As interest in microtonality grows, these innovative necks are poised to inspire a new generation of experimental and traditional players alike.

Whether you’re a composer seeking new musical dimensions or a guitarist eager to break free from conventional tuning constraints, Cargill’s microtonal necks offer a compelling tool to unlock the infinite possibilities of sound.
