Rest In Peace Dave Norman
It was with great shock and sadness we learnt of Dave’s passing on Thursday.
Dave was a friend of EJ Cards over many years, helping us from time to time with footy cards, something he was passionate about, even more so when those footy cards were Richmond.
Although I’ve been a keen Richmond fan all my life, Dave was more than a mad Richmond fan, he was a Richmond legend. A selfless servant of the Richmond Club for more than 25 years as the Cheer Squad president and much more. When Richmond was on the brink of financial catastrophe in 1990 the club famously launched its Save Our Skins campaign. Dave promptly took 3 months off his FT job and worked tirelessly in the campaign. To say Dave loved the Richmond FC is simply a massive understatement.
Dave combined his passion for Richmond with a natural bedfellow, trading cards. I’d be shocked if anyone in Australia has a collection like Dave’s. He also had an encyclopedic knowledge of vintage VFL cards. Dave was generous with this knowledge of footy cards, many of us were fortunate enough to learn from him. His generosity in the hobby also extended to many fellow collectors – he very much believed in mutually beneficial trades, he said didn’t even mind helping Collingwood collectors, as long as it didn’t become common knowledge he helped Collingwood collectors!
And yes Dave knew all the best Collingwood jokes, many of which are not repeatable in polite company!
During his occasional times at EJ Cards Dave’s larger than life personality connected with many collectors, young & old. When you asked Dave how he was on any given day, he would usually reply, “any better and I’d be shi sparkles”..
You were one of kind Dave. Rest in peace big fellow.
Condolences to the Norman family and his friends.
