If you're familiar with 7 Years in Tibet then you'll know that Heinrich Harrer didn't escape alone and that the original escape party comprised 5 men, 2 of whom returned to the POW camp and the others split into 2 groups and then 3 (or put another way, one went off in a huff on his own). Of the 5 men, 4 wrote books about their experience and this is one of them. It's very interesting to read the different perspectives of the men and their responses to the same circumstances, and the inevitable frictions that arose between them and also the different objectives that each man had. All of them ended up not speaking to each other for long periods and Aufschnaiter's memoir "8 Years in Tibet" could just as easily have been called "Not Bitter, Much". Maegner's account sheds some light on the enmity that arose between Harrer and pretty much everyone else.

This is a 2001 reprint (hardcover with dust jacket) of Maegner's account, in near-fine condition. You really don't have to be a war-book enthusiast to enjoy it, as it's as much an adventure as anything else. An arduous adventure, it must be said, but not without some highlights. And the escape itself beggars belief.

Recently we were talking to fellow book dealer Sonny Ideker about prize bindings. Schools still give books as prizes but it's been a long time since they invested in specific bindings let alone a binding of this quality. The finest tooled calf with real gold (not synthetic foil) feels like a worthy prize and in this case the binder was also asked to reflect the content (William Morris's Earthly Paradise) with a border of Morris-designed poppies.

Prize bindings have a collector market all their own and are a beautiful way to make a collection of books. Who wouldn't want a shelf full of books this lovely? They're also made in small numbers making them limited editions and in some cases unique.

Because our online followers are missing out on our current in-store sale, we've decided to do some special offers, just online, starting with this beauty. Discounted from $550 to $350 (yes, you read that correctly, it's a $200 saving) and we're including free shipping anywhere in Australia. We will post overseas; DM us for a quote.

Shelves are emptying fast and we've had to go in and rearrange a couple of times. Thank you to everyone who's dropped in and bought a book.

A couple of people have asked if there will be further discounts in coming weeks. The answer to that is "no". We have already discounted heavily, with some books marked down by more than 50%, so the discounts that apply today will apply until our last day of trading in Robertson.

Come in for a browse. You never know what you might find.

Just take me

You could be forgiven for thinking this was an anguished poem, but it's a line from an intriguing note we found tucked into a book. We find all sorts of things in books - receipts, shopping lists, letters, pressed flowers - but this note is one of the more interesting things we've come across. It's sparked hours of conversation as we speculate about the meaning behind it all. More than anything, we'd love to know who wrote it, but such mysteries usually remain mysteries.

Sometimes book dealing is part archaeology, part detective work, but it's always interesting.

Don't forget, our closing down sale continues with discounts of up to 50% off all books. We're open from 10am-4pm, 7 days a week, and you'll find us on the ground floor of the Coolroom Emporium (Old Cheese Factory) on Hoddle St. Books are flying off the shelves so don't tarry.

CLOSING DOWN SALE

I'm sorry to announce that we will be closing our Robertson store. We made it through bushfires, floods, months of road closures, Covid, and the introduction of tariffs but we can't weather the current fuel crisis. For us it means we can no longer bring books in from overseas without passing significant costs onto our customers and customers just won't accept it. The recent loss of weekend tourism, except on big weekends like Mother's Day, has resulted in a 90% downturn in trade in-store for us, and it's clear that we don't have enough week-day local support to balance that out. It's disappointing that after 10 years of trading we have to mark that anniversary by closing the store.

Over the next 4 weeks we'll be discounting lots of stock, so there'll be plenty of bargains for in-store shoppers.

We hope to reopen in another town sometime in the future, but until then, we will transition to trading online. Our book finding, estate disposal, appraisal and conservation services won't change and our contact details are the same.

It's been a hard decision to make and we'd like to thank everyone who came to Robertson and found a book in our store.
