Uranium glass—distinctive for its vibrant yellow-green hue and brilliant neon glow under UV light—was first mass-produced in 1830 by Bohemian glassmaker Josef Riedel. Though the Romans accidentally used uranium in glass as early as 79 AD, Riedel popularized the aesthetic. It was prized purely as a decorative coloring agent until production halted during WWII due to government requisitioning of uranium for the Manhattan Project.
