🚨 COUNTERFEIT CAR IMPORT SCHEME EXPOSED AS ABF UNCOVERS 900+ SUSPICIOUS ENTRIES 🚨
Australian Border Force has uncovered an alleged widespread scheme involving counterfeit permits used to import vehicles into Australia.
Operation VESTIBULE was launched after ABF analysts identified more than 900 vehicle import entries that could not be matched to legitimate Vehicle Import Approvals.
Investigators found some importers were allegedly supplying fake approvals to customs brokers rather than waiting for legitimate permits.
The suspicious vehicles included both commercial and private imports and arrived mainly through ports in NSW, Victoria and Queensland.
More than $74,000 in fines have been issued as a result of the operation.
A wider audit of one importer also uncovered $757,000 in unpaid GST and Luxury Car Tax. Authorities said the money has since been recovered.
ABF warned importers that vehicles generally need approval before being shipped to Australia.
Vehicles arriving without the required approval can be stopped at the border, with importers potentially facing significant penalties and storage costs.
Authorities said there is no evidence customs brokers involved in the identified cases knew the documents were fraudulent.
