Designing for the future you can’t see 👀
This bowl taught me that you can’t design only for today.

When I was sculpting this fruit bowl, I had to think beyond the size in front of me. Clay shrinks in the kiln (this piece approx. 10-15%), so every measurement had to anticipate a future version of itself.

It feels like a metaphor for life. The habits you build, the objects you make and the systems you design all become something different with time. You don’t create for the present moment. You create for what’s coming next.

More than anything, I wanted to create an object that invites use. A bowl that keeps fruit within reach, brightens my kitchen bench and quietly encourages good habits.

This bowl is hand-sculpted and intentionally oversized in its first life so it could become the right size in its second.

Sometimes good design is simply trusting the process. 🤍

The Messy Formist didn’t begin with a product idea.💡

It began with a slow accumulation of skills, values, questions, and fatigue.

“Like many creatives, I live/d with a backlog of unfinished projects. Ideas arrived faster than my schedule allowed. My days were fragmented across roles and deadlines. I loved what I did, but the constant output made it difficult to bring my own work to completion.”

In my latest journal entry, I share the story behind TMF, why I created it, and the philosophy that sits beneath every candle and object I make.

From discovering form, falling in love with the design of Harry Potter, working in the film and television industry, casual work for up skilling, to reclaiming time for creative work.

“I knew I wanted to build something outside the film production cycle, something that would allow me to choose my output so that I had time and energy to finish my personal projects. Something that used the skills I’d accumulated over my lifetime.”

🏛️ Architecture Appreciation

At first glance, these columns seem impossible. What makes it extraordinary?

The Director’s House, Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans, France 🇫🇷
Designed by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux
Built 1775–1779

Designed during the Age of Enlightenment, the columns alternate between cylindrical drums and square stone blocks, transforming a familiar classical element into something almost mechanical.

Most columns are designed to disappear. These were designed to be noticed. Transforming a structural necessity into a visual statement.

Why? Salt production was one of France’s most important industries. The building was designed as the administrative centre of a major saltworks. Ledoux believed architecture should express a building’s purpose, and these columns evoke ideas of industry, labour, process and manufacture.

Fun details to notice 👀
* Circular forms interrupted by square blocks
* Every column is technically classical, yet feels completely unfamiliar
* A cave-like entrance emerging from precise classical geometry. The rough grotto entrance contrasts with the refined geometry above

The result feels simultaneously ancient, futuristic and industrial. A reminder that objects don’t just serve functions. They communicate ideas.

One last round of candle making before The Messy Formist officially launches.

What started as an idea about how objects can support focus, intention, and meaningful work has become hundreds of hand-poured candles, countless experiments, and more late nights than I can count.
