I spent some time this week pulling out a few pieces from the Nas collection while recording a Reel and figured the still shots deserved their own post.

From Illmatic classics and promo pieces through to later releases, there aren't many artists whose catalogue I've collected as heavily over the years. Every format seems to tell a different part of the story.

What's your favourite Nas album fam? 🎀

Ice Cube - Lethal Injection

Year - 1993

Personal Note -

This has always felt like one of the more underrated Ice Cube releases to me. While it doesn't carry the same raw aggression as Death Certificate, it perfectly captures the early 90s West Coast vibe with Cube's unmistakable voice & sharp lyrics.

The production is smooth & funky, but Cube still manages to slip plenty of substance into the mix. Pictured is the Australian release of this classic which I believe is quite rare in the wild.

If you're a fan of that golden era G-Funk sound, this is well worth revisiting and it is a favourite of mine. Peace.

Overview -

Following the success of The Predator, Ice Cube returned with a heavier West Coast production style built around deep basslines, funk samples and laid-back grooves.

While the album carries more cruising music than his earlier work, Cube never strays too far from the sharp storytelling, social commentary and street observations that made him one of hip hop's most respected voices.

Tracks like "Really Doe", "Bop Gun (One Nation)" and "You Know How We Do It" showcase the smoother G-Funk influence, while songs such as "Enemy" remind listeners that Cube could still deliver hard-hitting messages with authority.

Although Lethal Injection is sometimes overshadowed by Cube's earlier classics, it remains an important chapter in his catalogue and captures the moment when West Coast rap fully took control of the hip hop landscape.

A quick look at the new Big L shelf piece. One of Harlem's finest, now getting the Golden Era 3D treatment.

One of the standout singles from a true hip hop CLASSIC. Mos and Talib trading bars effortlessly over that unforgettable beat from Hi-Tek.

This record that still sounds as fresh today as it did in '98 when first hearing it. I say it frequently, but this is essential for any 90's hip hop collection.

What a track from that legendary Rawkus era 🎧

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony – E. 1999 Eternal

Year - 1995

Personal Note -

Tuesday morning here in Perth. It's cold and I'm chilling with a hot coffee and the legendary BTNH in the deck β˜•οΈπŸ”Š

The thing that always stands out to me is how effortless the chemistry feels between all five members. The flows are incredibly complex, yet everything sounds smooth and melodic at the same time.

Few (if any) groups have ever blended singing and rapping as naturally as Bone did. Most people immediately think of "Tha Crossroads", but this album has variety, and it's the darker album cuts that keep bringing me back. Tracks like "East 1999", "Mo Murda" and "Land of tha Heartless" showcase the group's unique style and storytelling at its absolute best.

This is a timeless classic that still sounds fresh nearly three decades later and essential for any 90's hip hop collection. Peace.

Overview -

Released on July 25, 1995, E. 1999 Eternal was the album that transformed Bone Thugs-N-Harmony from rising stars into hip hop legends. Dedicated to the memory of Eazy-E, the record fused melodic harmonies, lightning-fast flows and dark, atmospheric production into a sound unlike anything else being heard at the time.

Representing Cleveland's East 99th Street, Bone created an album that balanced street life, spirituality, loss, loyalty and survival. DJ U-Neek's haunting production provided the perfect backdrop for Krayzie, Layzie, Bizzy, Wish and Flesh to showcase a style that countless artists would later attempt to imitate but never truly replicate.

The album delivered massive hits including "1st of tha Month", "East 1999" and the iconic "Tha Crossroads", while deeper cuts revealed the darker, more experimental side of the group. More than thirty years later, it remains one of the defining releases of 90s hip hop and one of the greatest examples of Midwest rap ever recorded.

RIP Eric "Eazy-E" Wright, the original hip hop thugster πŸ™πŸΌπŸ•Š

Jamal - Last Chance, No Breaks

Year - 1995

Personal Note -

This is one of those tapes that hip hop heads know, but can often get overlooked. The Erick Sermon production gives it that unmistakable Def Squad flavour, while Jamal sounds hungry from start to finish.

"Fades Em All" is the track everybody remembers, but there's plenty more here if you dig deeper and let the tape play. This is a seriously underrated 1995 release that deserves far more love than it gets. Peace.

Overview -

At just 16 years old when the album was recorded, Jamal delivered one of the most impressive debut performances of the era.

While many remember him solely for the classic single "Fades Em All", the full album showcases a young MC with serious mic presence, charisma and technical ability beyond his years.

Production comes largely from Erick Sermon and the Def Squad camp, giving the project a warm, bass-heavy sound built on funky loops, rugged drums and streetwise energy. Jamal's laid-back delivery sits perfectly over the production, balancing youthful confidence with clever wordplay throughout.

The standout single "Fades Em All" remains the obvious classic, but deeper cuts like "Keep It Real", "The Game", "It's A Jam" and "No Breaks" reveal an album that deserves far more recognition than it receives. It's one of those records that often gets lost amongst the heavyweight releases of 1995, yet still holds up remarkably well today.

While Jamal never reached the commercial heights many expected, Last Chance, No Breaks remains a snapshot of a talented young MC making the most of his opportunity and proving he belonged amongst the era's elite.

Getting these out tonight brought back memories of saving up for new releases, tearing off the plastic, and playing them until every lyric was burned into memory. Come on heads, you know exactly what I'm talking about! 😊

From Illmatic to Light-Years, it's been an incredible run. Not many artists can claim a catalogue this deep. One of the greatest.

Devin The Dude - The Dude

Year - 1998

Personal Note -

I believe this is one of those albums that gets better every time you revisit it. No gimmicks, just Devin doing what Devin does best.. laid back Southern hip hop.

It's got smooth production, quality features, unique storytelling, and enough personality to make every track memorable.

If you were putting together a collection of essential Southern hip hop, I think this one deserves a place on the shelf. Peace.

Overview -

The Dude is a smooth, smoke-filled ride through Houston life, built around Devin's effortless storytelling, sharp observations and unmistakable sense of humour. Rather than relying on gangster posturing or flashy bravado, Devin focused on everyday experiences, relationships, good times, bad decisions and the realities of life around him.

Production throughout the album is warm, soulful and relaxed, allowing Devin's conversational delivery to take centre stage. Guest appearances from DMG, Spice 1, K-Dee, K.B. and fellow Rap-A-Lot affiliates add variety without ever taking attention away from the album's star attraction.

Tracks such as "Do What You Wanna Do", "See What I Could Pull", "Like A Sweet" and "Don't Go" showcase the qualities that would make Devin a cult favourite for decades to come. The album balances humour and introspection effortlessly, creating a project that feels genuine rather than manufactured.

More than 25 years later, The Dude remains one of the most underrated Southern hip hop albums of the late 90s and an essential piece of Houston rap history.
