George, one of our group members, really encouraged members from the group to enter the monthly competitions. The June competition item had a number of us stumped. A 3 sided vase. How do you turn something that is round with 3 sides? The great thing about a group is that there is generally someone there who knows how to do these things and is more than happy to share their skills and knowledge and then support your learning and growth.

Bob gave an impromptu demo and then we got to trying it. It was challenging trying to turn a shadow but rewarding to see the end results!

Thought about trying woodturning but don't know what you need or don't want to outlay the costs if it isn't for you? The Wandi Woodturning group has a selection of tools that members can use so you don't need to turn up with an overflowing tool box!

New members can attend for up to four sessions before they need to actually join which gives you time to work out if this is for you!

It’s been three sided vases galore at Wandi Woodturners getting ready for the competition in Collie last weekend.

Here is a small selection of the vases from Wednesday’s group including Steve’s 3rd place winner in the Novice category. Congratulations Steve and congratulations to everyone who got something in for this months competition.

…..now, who is ready to start on a toy with 4 moving parts?!

Does anyone know an ‘average’ person?! I don’t! Silver lining, I am WELL ABOVE average 😂

On Wednesday morning Wandi member, Bill, ran an informal show and tell/demo on emerging bowls. Bill had managed to find examples of various stages of completion to illustrate the process. There’s always something to learn and always someone who is happy to share their knowledge and skills!

This week Graham gave a demo on how to use the ring tool known as ‘The Termite’ for hollowing. Members got to give it a go to compare it to traditional tools used for hollowing. I think a few of us are converts. Our demos are generally short and ad hoc but a great way to pick up new skills and try new tools.

Check out this cool road racer! Inspired by an Easter theme photo, one of our Wandi members made a few minor adjustments and the bunny ears were swapped out for long flowing locks and the road racer was born!

The turner has now passed it on to my 11 year old to give this beauty a coat of paint and some personality over the weekend. It’s a team effort (and the team members have never met!)

Big thank you to Wandi member Chris Gray who allowed me to share his project. Chris found about 6m of driftwood while out on a fishing trip. Luckily he had his trusty chainsaw with him and could cut it into managable lengths to lug it home.

Chris wasn't sure that he would be able to turn the wood as it was quite p***y and split but he gave it a go anyway. It was a labour of love with two custom tools needing to be made to make it happen.

The video is made up of the progress photos Chris shared along the way. Hope you enjoy the video!
