Such an exciting moment to see our Dahlia images on Australia Post stamps!!! Three stamps have been released as well as a special collection ‘Dahlias: Australian Cultivars’; including the stamps, postcards, envelopes, collector packs and a medallion. 🌸

Thank you for putting a spotlight on our amazing Australian Dahlia breeders. I always feel so lucky to be able to grow these beautiful flowers and I am so proud that some of my images have been included to share the Dahlia love with Australia.

From left to right in this pic (our Dahlia images):

🌸 FORMBY SUNRISE - Collarette Dahlia bred by George Harding of Tasmania.

🌸 FLORELIE WHIPPED CREAM - Large Decorative Dahlia, bred by Lorelie Merton of in Victoria. Lorelie is leading the younger generation of breeders in Australia and has inspired so much growth in our Australian Dahlia industry.

🌸 HILLARA JEAN - Collarette Dahlia bred by Jim Reynolds of Victoria.

🌸 WANGOLINA SEMILLON - Medium Cactus Dahlia, bred by Anita Goode of in South Australia. This Dahlia is one of the three stamps released, such a stunning Dahlia! Anita is also a VERY talented wine maker.

The two other stamps released by AusPost feature:

🌸 Bracken Palamino - bred by Neville Naumann, QLD
🌸 Nayap - bred by Bill Johnson, VIC

Dahlias from the following growers and breeders are also included in this special collection:

Thanks so much to Belinda Nemec and for putting this beautiful project together 🌸💖

Make sure you support our Dahlia breeders and buy your Dahlia tubers directly from the breeder whenever you can - this is the best way to support their breeding programs. I also started a Dahlia Breeder Royalty Program a few years ago and a number of other tuber sellers run a similar program now also, so you can still support the breeders by purchasing your tubers from a seller who directly contributes back to the breeder if you can’t source your tubers directly from the breeder themselves.

It is going to be an amazing year for Australian Dahlias!

The Dahlias are all lifted! 🌸🥔

After a huge couple of weeks we have lifted all the Dahlias and we have our Italian Anemones (over 18,000) and some of our Italian Poppies planted for Spring. Over the next week or so (in the pouring rain if we believe the forecast 😬) we will be finishing bed prep and planting the majority of our Colibri Poppies (8,500) and more than 28,000 stunning Italian Ranunculus. Gosh I am excited for Spring!! 💐

For those already asking when our Dahlia tuber sale will be - we hold our Winter Dahlia Tuber Presale every July, once we have finished dividing (which will start as soon as we finish planting our Spring crops) and we have confirmed numbers of each variety. The date and time of our tuber sale will be confirmed soon and announced only to our email subscribers.

We release half of our tuber stock in our Winter Pre-Sale and keep the other half for both our own planting and as a buffer to make sure we have plenty of backup in case we lose any in storage. Any surplus tubers after that will be released in Spring once we have shipped all the Winter Pre-Sale orders and planted our fields.

You can subscribe on the website to be notified about our tuber sale and other releases here:

I hope you are loving playing in the dirt at this time of year. The work you do now will reward you ten-fold in flowering season, so get dirty! 😉😘

The stunning Dahlia in this pic is Lileah Royal Robe, bred by our epically talented Aussie breeder (and the most beautiful human) Kate Mungoven.

Special thanks to my AMAZING flower fairy team - I cannot put into words how much I love not doing all of this on my own anymore, and you are always with me rain, hail or shine. I am very grateful for such a special group of women to spend my days in the field with. 💖

While we cut down and lift our Dahlias from the ground for their Winter storage, we are planning all the beauty we will bring you next Dahlia season.

We will be adding another 1,000 Dahlias to our fields so we can offer you more of the on-farm experiences that we all love so much. There will be more than 5,000 Dahlias for you to wander through and create your own Dahlia bouquet next Autumn. The farm is already a special place but more definitely is more 😉 when it comes to Dahlias! It is going to be so magical 🌸✨

We will be dividing our tubers over the next couple of months and we will have our very popular annual Winter Dahlia Tuber Presale in July, once we have finished dividing and have firm numbers.

All going well we will also release a small collection of Dahlia seeds in August.

A lot of our Dahlia offerings sell out with our email subscribers, who always get first access to our sales for a day before we announce them on social media. So make sure you subscribe on the website to be notified about our releases:

The excitement of what is to come definitely helps us get through the ‘Manual May Days’. Behind the scenes of these pretty blooms we are covered in dirt and all our muscles hurt, but the beauty when our fields are in bloom and the joy the Dahlias bring make the effort so worth it! This is such a rewarding way to live and share life 🌸💖

I love how close my ducks and geese get when I am working on my own!

Although maybe it’s the enticement of freshly cut-down Dahlia plants 😉

They are however impeding my podcast catch-up time as there is a LOT of excited chatter 😂😂

It’s the simple things.. 🦆🦆🪿🦆🦆🪿

Winter is one of the most important times of year for growing healthy, productive Dahlias — and it’s also the stage that many gardeners find the most overwhelming.

After years of growing thousands of Dahlias across hundreds of varieties here at Southern Highlands Flower Farm, I’ve created a comprehensive online workshop to guide you step-by-step through the entire winter process with confidence.

In this workshop, I’ll show you exactly how I cut back, lift, divide, store and prepare my Dahlias for the next growing season, along with the practical tips and techniques I use on the farm for stronger plants and better blooms.

Whether you’re brand new to Dahlias or looking to improve your results, this workshop is designed to make the process simple, approachable and easy to follow from home, at your own pace.

Wow it has been a busy couple of weeks!! 🌸🌱

My fabulous flower fairies and I have shipped nearly 4,000 Spring seedlings - our specialty Italian Ranunculus, Anemones and Colibri Poppies.

We spend Friday’s potting up the plug seedlings into compostable (and plantable!) bio-pots; on Monday’s we package the potted seedlings into recyclable and compostable bags and strings; and on Tuesday’s they all get boxed up and shipped out! It is very time intensive and we don’t ship later than Tuesday each week (for plants) to ensure they don’t get stuck in the mail over a weekend. It is really important to us that we do this in an environmentally friendly way that is also beautiful.

As of today all pre-orders, as well as all orders up to and including Sunday have shipped. We still have small numbers of Ranunculus and Anemone seedlings available on the website and these will ship express the Tuesday following your order each week.

Thank you so much for all of your support. We can’t wait to see all of your garden’s blooming in Spring!!

Now we are off to focus on prepping and planting over 50,000 in our own ‘garden’ 😉

While this might be my only Peony harvest for the season thanks to a very unexpected heatwave mid-late October, I am still smiling because they are SO PRETTY!!!

The plants themselves are super healthy and they are still very young, so it really is fine for us to wait another year or two for a proper crop (I am both impressed and surprised at my patience with this flower 😉). We had so many more flowers last year (and I didn’t think it was much then!) but unseasonable 30d in October blew the early varieties open early and too quickly, most of the mids either didn’t open or opened too quickly and the late varieties aborted as they thought it was already Summer. This is just part of growing 🤷🏻‍♀️

We have a magic climate here for growing Peonies with the cold temps required, which in theory is the most important flowering determinant, but heat-waves mid-Spring are very detrimental to blooming, so we are obviously very much hoping this is a rare occurrence. Mother Nature will let us know as time goes on of course!

We are regularly hoe-weeding and deadheading to keep the plants happy and healthy. Just before Christmas we will add a light buckwheat companion cover crop and sugarcane mulch to feed the soil, protect the roots from too much heat and suppress the weeds - all while the plants happily absorb the sun to feed the roots for next years blooms, which are going to be AMAZING!!!
