Kanangra Hand-Drawn Map
Myles Dunphy first visited Kanangra in 1912 and returned year after year, carefully mapping the rugged terrain and deep wilderness. His hand-drawn maps reveal the dedication and detail with which he explored and documented the area.
Myles Dunphy was so devoted to the region that he and his wife, Margaret, modified a pram to take their young son, Milo, on the long journey from Oberon to Kanangra Walls. Fittingly, Milo’s middle name was Kanangra—a name that beautifully reflected his connection to the region and its landscape.
Myles tirelessly lobbied for the protection of this remarkable landscape, advocating for it to be declared a national park. Decades later, his son Milo continued the campaign, and in 1969 Kanangra-Boyd was officially established as a National Park — securing its protection for future generations.
This beautifully detailed hand-drawn map, along with a fascinating collection of Oberon’s historical artefacts, is on display at the Oberon & District Museum, Scotia Avenue, Oberon.
The museum is open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
