Twelve Years Room Screen for the Rigg Design Prize at NGV - opening today.

Evolving from my conviction that the hand of the maker must remain present in an increasingly automated, digitalised and accelerated design landscape. Built from 432 brass motifs, each press-formed, cut, sandblasted, patinated, and stitched by hand, this work scales up to architectural proportions, a jewellery technique first learned twelve years ago. Every component is a record of labour and focus, with slight variations that assert my hand’s presence.

The pressed forms carry personal meaning, referencing my life as a maker, a woman, a metal worker, and an artist. Together, they form a symbolic language that represents how I have been shaped by the very material I spent twelve years shaping.

Hand stitching was chosen to honour traditional craft techniques historically associated with women, combining them with metalwork traditionally associated with men, symbolising the dissolution of gendered craft boundaries.

This is a work I could get lost in at times, I have been absorbed by it for months and months so I am so so proud to have it out in the world and on show as part of this incredible exhibition of works.
