The past few weeks have been incredibly difficult. First, the heartbreaking loss of my sister and now, on Sunday, my beautiful mum passed away.

Mum was not only my mother, but also my best friend and the strongest supporter of My Medical Folder. She truly was my everything.

My heart is shattered, and there are no words that can fully express the depth of this loss. I'm taking time to grieve and begin to heal, knowing it will be a long journey.

I want to thank you all for your patience and understanding during my absence from social media. The kind messages, quiet support, and simply holding space while I navigate this time have meant more than you know. Thank you for sticking with me. Lou x

In Loving Memory of My Sister, Joanne

It’s with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my beautiful sister, Joanne, after her courageous battle with cancer this week.

Jo was my greatest inspiration in creating My Medical Folder. Walking beside her through her journey, I witnessed first hand the strength it takes to face a serious diagnosis—and how important it is to be prepared, informed, and supported.

As I continue to work on a revised edition of My Medical Folder, Jo remains at the heart of it all. Her story, her bravery, and her love will continue to guide me every step of the way.

Fly high, Jo. I love you endlessly, and I will carry your light forward always. 💜

— Louise

A Personal Note:

I wanted to take a moment to gently explain my recent quietness on social media. What many may not know is that I’ve been caring for my sister Joanne, who is living with a terminal illness. We have approached an incredibly emotional and challenging time, and have chosen to step back and focus on being present for her and my family.

While I’m taking time away from regular updates, I’m grateful to be working behind the scenes with Nicole .studio a revised edition of My Medical Folder, which I hope to release later this year.

In the meantime, we still have a small number of our original folders available for purchase. Your understanding means so much as I prioritise being with Joanne through this part of her journey.

Thank you for your continued support. It means more than you know.

Warmly,
Louise ❤️

What Happens to the Brain in Heightened Stress—and Why It Affects Recall in Emergencies 🧠⚠️

In a moment of stress—especially during a medical emergency—the brain goes into "survival mode." This is called the fight-or-flight response, where your body floods with stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol.

While this reaction is designed to help you react quickly, it has a downside:

🔄 Blood flow is redirected to essential systems (like muscles), reducing activity in the prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain responsible for decision-making and memory recall.

😵‍💫 You may feel foggy, disoriented, or unable to recall even basic facts like medication names, dosages, or past conditions.

🧠 Long-term or chronic stress can actually impair memory formation and retrieval.

This is why, even if you know your health history by heart, you might not be able to recall it when it matters most.

✨ Having a system like My Medical Folder ensures the right information is always available—whether it’s for you, a loved one, or a first responder. In stressful moments, it gives your brain one less thing to worry about.

Supporting Someone Through Palliative Care 💙

Transitioning into palliative care as a carer is one of the most emotionally challenging phases of a caregiving journey. It marks a shift from pursuing curative treatment to focusing on comfort, quality of life, and dignity for the person you love. Here are some thoughts on how to manage this transition with compassion and strength:

Embracing the Role with Heart and Honesty
When a loved one enters palliative care, your role as a carer becomes even more personal. It’s no longer just about managing appointments and medications—it's about being present, emotionally supportive, and often, the voice of advocacy for their needs and wishes.

Communicate Openly and Gently
Talk openly with the person you’re caring for—when they are ready—about their preferences, fears, and what brings them comfort. These conversations are difficult, but they’re also deeply meaningful and can guide how care is delivered.

Work Closely with the Palliative Care Team
You are not alone. Lean into the support and expertise of the palliative care team. Ask questions, raise concerns, and let them help you make informed decisions. They’re there not only for your loved one but for you too.

Take Care of Yourself
It’s easy to forget your own needs, but your well-being is essential. Accept help from family, friends, or respite services. Even small breaks can restore your energy and spirit.

Find Moments of Meaning
Palliative care is not about giving up—it’s about shifting focus to comfort and connection. Celebrate the little moments. A smile. A shared memory. A quiet hand-hold. These are the things that will stay with you.

Organise the Practicalities
Keeping important medical information, preferences, and contacts in one place can reduce stress and confusion. A system like My Medical Folder can help you feel more in control during uncertain times, allowing you to focus on what matters most—being there.

You are doing something incredibly hard and incredibly meaningful. Be kind to yourself. You're not expected to do it perfectly—only with love. 💙

Why Paper Files Still Matter in the Digital Age.

In a world dominated by apps and cloud storage, you might wonder: do paper files still have a place? The answer is a resounding yes, especially when it comes to managing vital medical information. Here’s why:

1. Accessibility When It Matters Most.

Paper files are universally accessible. In an emergency, there’s no need to remember passwords, navigate apps, or rely on internet connections. First responders, family members, or caregivers can quickly grab a hard copy and find the information they need.

2. No Tech Barriers.

Not everyone is comfortable with digital solutions, especially older individuals or those who aren’t tech-savvy. Paper files provide a straightforward, no-fuss alternative that anyone can use.

3. Reliability in Emergencies.

Technology can fail—phones run out of battery, apps crash, and networks go down. Paper files are always ready, ensuring your information is available no matter the circumstances.

4. Tangible Organisation.

There’s something satisfying about flipping through organised, labeled pages. Paper files allow you to physically interact with your documents, making it easier to keep track of updates and additions.

5. Easy Sharing.

A hard copy of your medical information can easily be handed to a doctor, nurse, or caregiver. There’s no need to worry about file compatibility, printing on the spot, or struggling with digital transfers.

6. Supports Advanced Care Planning.

When paired with tools like advanced care directives, paper files ensure your wishes are clear and legally documented. They make it easy to communicate your preferences with loved ones and healthcare providers.

The Best of Both Worlds.

While digital solutions have their benefits, paper files offer reliability and accessibility that technology can’t always guarantee. Products like My Medical Folder combine thoughtful organisation with the timeless practicality of a physical file, ensuring peace of mind for you and your loved ones.

Palliative Care:
Support for Cancer Patients and their Carers.

When facing a cancer diagnosis, life can feel overwhelming—not just for the patient, but also for their loved ones and caregivers. This is where palliative care plays a vital role.

💡 What Is Palliative Care?
Palliative care focuses on improving the quality of life for individuals living with serious illnesses, including cancer. It’s not just about managing physical symptoms but also addressing emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs.

This type of care is patient-centered and extends to supporting carers, recognising the crucial role they play in the journey.

For Cancer Patients Palliative care helps:

Manage Symptoms: Control pain, fatigue, nausea, and other side effects of treatments.

Coordinate Care: Ensure all aspects of a patient’s health—physical, emotional, and social—are addressed.

Provide Emotional Support: Counsel patients on coping strategies and help them make decisions about their care preferences.

For Carers
Carers often bear a significant emotional and physical load. Palliative care teams help by:

Offering Guidance: Provide carers with resources, education, and advice on managing the patient’s care.
Emotional Resilience: Support carers with counseling and coping mechanisms to handle the stress.

Planning Ahead: Assist in preparing for transitions in care or advanced care directives, ensuring the patient’s wishes are honored.

Why It Matters
Palliative care teams work closely with patients and their families to create a supportive network. This care isn’t limited to end-of-life situations; it can begin alongside curative treatments and continues as needs evolve.

For both patients and carers, having a dedicated team to lean on makes a world of difference in navigating this challenging journey.

💬 You’re Not Alone
Palliative care is about living well, no matter the circumstances. If you or someone you love is navigating cancer, reach out to your healthcare provider to learn more about accessing these essential services.
