At the risk of accusations of objectification, Grevillea aquifolium - Silver Leaf Form can aptly be described as being a gorgeous silver fox. Grrrhhhh!

This selection is a medium shrub that is deliriously happy if given a hot, dry, frosty, location. It's a real toughie! The orange-red tooth-brush flowers combined with those prickly leaves, supplies food, refuge and nesting opportunities for small birds. Oh, the silver, holly-leaf foliage is striking when used for Christmas-themed floristry.

There are two forms of the beautiful Tassel Cord Rush available for sale. The typical, Baloskion tetraphyllum subsp. tetraphyllum is taller growing, 1 - 1. 8 metres high and wide and displays slender Bamboo-like stems and wispy foliage.
The dwarf form grows as a compact, fluffy explosion of bright green with a height of 60 cm to 1 metre high and wide.
Both are highly desirable and suited to garden planting, particularly in a damp area next to a pond but both are suited to container planting also. You can use either plant, or both and you'll have a wonderfully soft display of foliage. The reason for using both forms in this instance, is that it gives some height as well as soft foliage that drapes and softens the container.
The dwarf form is sold under a range of names including .... big breath in ...Baloskion tetraphyllum subsp. meiostachyus Dwarf Form, Baloskion 'Green Wedge'

Grevillea jephcottii - Pine Mountain Grevillea has been available in specialist native nurseries for many years yet it is at risk in its natural habitat within Victoria where it occurs in and near Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park and listed as a Threatened species*.
It's a dinky shrub, with its typical form having an upright but narrow form that makes it useful for a narrow garden bed, where a height of 2 metres is useful. We grow the taller form but also have a dwarf form that is compact and less than a metre high and wide. The green flowers of both are unusual and enchanting on close inspection, nectar-laden and popular with birds. The foliage is velvety and dense. It an easy plant to grow, happy in well-drained clay or gravelly soils in full or filtered sun, it is frost hardy and drought-tolerant. Tip pruning of the taller form results in a bushier habit if that is required.
Conservation through Cultivation is an important part of helping ensure the survival of our Australian flora and growing those plants that are listed as Threatened is of particular importance.

Once it has settled in and made itself comfortable, the flowers of groundcover, Hibbertia pedunculata 'Boomers will completely cover the foliage.
With a spread of around one metre, it will cuddle up around rocks or drape beautifully in a container or over an embankment. It flowers from mid-winter through spring and when the flowers are finally done doing the Can Can, you'll see it's lovely matt, moss-like foliage.
Suitable for a range of soil, it's frost-hardy and happy in full to filtered sun.

Lasiopetalum behrii - Pink Velvet Bush, (although NOT to be confused with Lasiopetalum baueri - Slender Velvet Bush) is happy in... well-drained clay, alkaline soils, coastal sites, frosty areas, local Melbourne or semi-arid areas. Useful as a low-windbreak, for floral display, full to filtered sun.
A small to medium shrub with lovely, velvety foliage and gorgeous flowers in winter through to mid-spring. Is there nothing it can't do? Probably, but can't think of anything now and anyway, we'd be nitpicking.

Anything with orange-yellow and red-brown pea flowers tends to be referred to as Eggs and Bacon and that's not really a problem. One of our favourite 'Eggs and Bacon' plants is Pultenaea gunnii.* It's a medium shrub with tiny, glossy leaves and ... well you can see the flowers.

It only occurs in Victoria and Tasmania and if you look up the hefty and wonderful book, Flora of Melbourne by Marilyn Bull - and yes Kuranga sells it - you'll see that it's a local plant. In fact, if you are driving up the Mt Dandenong Tourist Road, between Montrose and Kallista in late winter/early spring, you'll see it flowering hysterically en masse, on the high side of the road.

An easy one to grow in full to filtered sun and it's happy under established trees. *If you look it up, its common name is actually Golden Bush-pea, but we're not going to argue the point and continuing on with the food theme, when it comes to common names, they really are a moveable feast.
A great plant whatever it's common name is.
