Clive James (1939–2019)

Born in Sydney, Clive James was a poet, critic, essayist, and TV presenter.
He lived most of his life in London, where his dry humor and sharp eye made him a household name.

In his writing, he managed to make the serious stuff feel accessible, moving easily between pop culture and high art without losing the reader along the way.

You might know him from Unreliable Memoirs, his humorous account of growing up in post-war Australia.
I know him for his second book, the novel, Brilliant Creatures.

Even after being diagnosed with leukemia in 2010, James continued writing.

A truly original voice who never lost touch with his Australian roots.
