Timberbits

Timberbits Family-owned Australian store for woodturners and woodworkers: Australia’s largest range of pen kits, plus blanks, turning tools, finishes & project kits.

Hands-on classes at Wood Academy, Marrickville. timberbits.com
woodacademy.com.au We are a small Australian, family-owned operation specialising in servicing the needs of woodturners and woodworkers in Australia and around the globe. With a small team of friendly staff, we are ready to help you with your woodworking needs. Orders can be placed over the phone, online or you can pop into the shop to

make your purchase. We’re Sydney-based and also run Wood Academy in Marrickville, a dedicated learning space that facilitates regular and short-term woodworking and woodturning courses. This business started accidentally. Before Timberbits, woodturning tools and consumables were expensive and the range was limited. Most woodturners purchased their goods from overseas, especially from the USA and the UK. Timberbits has extended the range of pen kits and turning tools in Australia by directly sourcing from the USA, the UK, China and Taiwan. This means we can supply an extensive range of products at competitive prices. We continue to broaden our selection of pen kits and project kits to suit beginners through to advanced makers. We understand the importance of quality, the longevity of handmade pieces and durable platings. We are proud to offer kits made in Taiwan plated in Gold Titanium, Rhodium and Platinum, the best plating you can get in pen kits. Many of the pens featured on our site were made by our founder, David Lim; today our team and guest makers also showcase what’s possible with the kits and components we supply. We also understand the other side of pen making, the person who does it for fun, the beginner who likes to work within a budget, and the retiree who has to live within a small fixed income but loves making pens. Price is important, get the biggest bang for your buck. We are not a pen kit seller who thumbs their noses at affordable “made in China” kits. We believe they have a place in the marketplace alongside premium options. From humble beginnings selling only pen kits, we are now a leading Australian retailer of multiple brands including Vicmarc, Festool, Hamlet, Incra, Milescraft, Cactus Juice, just to name a few. As you can probably sense, we are passionate about the craft. We hope some of this passion rubs off on you and you create wonderful handmade pens and projects that you can share with the world.

Ever wondered what comes in a pen kit?

A Fancy Slimline broken down: ink refill, two brass tubes, a 7mm pen nib, centre band, clip, end cap, and the twist mechanism that brings the writing tip in and out.

That is everything in a basic kit. Just add a blank.

The Hamlet HCT144 heavy duty bowl scraper. Burr on takes more material, faster and easier but with a coarser finish.

Burr off gives you a glossy cut but you can only take a little at a time. Just make sure the edge is sharp and you're cutting, not burnishing.

Sharpened on the Tormek with the SVD-110 jig.

Switching from timber to acrylic pen blanks?

Drop your tool rest, angle your chisel, and slice instead of chop.

You'll get those long clean threads instead of chips, and a lot less chance of breakout.
