A remarkable discovery has brought an extraordinary piece of musical history back into the spotlight.

More than a century after the sinking of the RMS Titanic, researchers identified the surviving remains of the Steinway & Sons Model B created for Titanic’s First Class Reception Room.

The historical image accompanying this post shows the same Steinway Model B design and decorative art-case style, providing an accurate representation of exactly what Titanic’s piano would have looked like.

Although the wooden cabinet has disappeared, its distinctive cast-iron plate remained recognisable on the seabed. Comparison with original plans confirmed it as Steinway Model B serial number 146272, handcrafted in Hamburg for Titanic.

More than 100 years later, this discovery is a powerful reminder of the enduring craftsmanship and heritage of Steinway & Sons.

We are excited to announce that entries are now open for the 2026 Steinway Galleries Australia Youth Piano Competition.
