Design Process:
A Greek primordial deity, born from Chaos itself, Gaia is the Mother of all life.
Gaia is often depicted as a pregnant woman, with the earth representing her womb. We decided to represent her as a strong and empowered woman, taking charge of structuring the earth itself.
She has given birth to several creatures (Cyclopes, Hecatonchires, Typhon, etc.) and humanoid beings (Titans and their children – Olympians). Hence, we wanted Gaia to embody the form of a renowned legendary creature (Dragon) and a human.
To capture that duality, we created a statue where half of Gaia is a Nature/Forest Dragon (representing life force) and the other a human.
The base of the statue comprises of interlocking basalt columns. These columns are formed naturally by ancient volcanic fissure eruptions and have a structured/ordered appearance. The purpose of the base is to show that from Chaos, Gaia is bringing order and life to Primordial Earth.
Finally, the globe on her hand with leaves encompassing it is a representation of her nurturing/motherly characteristic.
