Sometimes I feel a bit guilty when I bring my kid along to work, or when work spills into our time together. I keep wondering if I’m doing enough of either thing properly. Do you ever feel that tension too, like you’re constantly trying to balance being present in both worlds? I’d love to know how others experience this.

Also, happy weekend 🤍

Every year I tell myself I’m not going to stress about figolli.

Every year here I am, elbow deep in almond paste, (kid also elbow deep in almond paste), rolling pin nowhere to be found 😂

There’s something about being Maltese and living abroad that makes you need to do this. Like if I don’t make figolli, did Easter even happen?

Started sketching a figolli inspired font this morning before we continue the bake off..

Anyone else? Making them, attempting them, or just calling your mum to send some over? 👇

Il-bajtar tax-xewk!

I drew this just now, on my phone at 10pm after the kid was finally in bed. Not quite Nanna’s garden but it made me happy :)

Somewhere between the bedtime battles the dishes, and the rest, I’m trying to hold onto little pieces of Malta for my kid and myself. A word here. A drawing there. A fruit he’ll probably only see in a picture (BREAKING: no prickly pears in Berlin) 😅

Does your child know what bajtar tax-xewk is? Drop a 🌵 if they do, or tag a Maltese mum who’s also figuring it out as she goes.

Il-Bombos — the Maltese name for leapfrog!

I’ve known the game my whole life — hopping over your friend’s back, laughing, losing your balance — but I only recently learned that here in Malta it’s called bombos.

Traditionally, the game was played exactly like leapfrog everywhere else:
two players take turns bending forward while others run up and leap over, hands on the bent player’s back, alternating until everyone’s too tired to go on. The fun part is in the rhythm, the timing, and the giggles.

Something about hearing a familiar game in a familiar word — bombos — really got me thinking about how many of these childhood moments connect us across time and place, even when we’re far from home.

Have you heard this name before? Or do you just call it leapfrog? Tell me your version ✨

Children start life believing the world revolves around them.

And in many ways, at the beginning, it does.

But slowly — through play, waiting, watching others, sharing space — they begin to discover something bigger:
that the world is full of other people too.

Real life moment: holidays with a young child are not always the dreamy, peaceful scenes we imagine. Sometimes they’re loud, messy, and honestly… a bit exhausting for mum and dad too.

But somewhere between the splashing, the shells, the “look at me!” and the endless questions, something important is happening.

Children are learning that the world is shared.

Not through lectures.
But through time.

Time to observe.
Time to play.
Time to be together.

And maybe that’s the real work of childhood.

Parents — do you also feel this mix of joy and exhaustion on trips with your kids?

Seashells, and time.

No fancy toys, just imagination at work.

Sometimes the best “materials” are the ones children collect themselves: a shell, a stone, a small treasure from the sea.

Moments like this remind me of the simple beach days many of us grew up with in Malta — pockets full of tiny discoveries.

At Tikka Tikka, I often come back to this idea: children don’t always need more things. Sometimes they just need time, space, and a few small treasures to spark their imagination…I find it extremely hard hard to carve out time in everyday life — but moments like these remind me how important it is.

What small treasures do your children love collecting? 🐚

X’se nilgħabu illum? 🎵

This week: Pizzi Pizzi Kanna — a Maltese counting game I remember from childhood.

No materials. No setup. Just hands, rhythm, and a rhyme.

Perfect for car rides, waiting rooms, kitchen tables… or when your brain is too tired for anything elaborate.

Small games like this carry language quietly forward.

Did you grow up playing this? Or will you try it with your little ones this week? 🤍

Thank you for meeting me at Book Fair Australia 🤍

To everyone who stopped, browsed, asked questions, shared stories — and to those cheering from afar — GRAZZI!

This weekend reminded me how many families are raising children between languages and cultures. It’s not always easy, but it is deeply meaningful.

Let’s keep this community going beyond the fair.

Tell me if you visited the stand — or where you were following from. 🌍

Grateful for the support of the who made this possible.
