An Italian instrument maker around the year 1700 fixed a problem with the harpsichord and ended up creating one of the world's most beloved instruments: the piano.

Bartolomeo Cristofori was a respected keeper of instruments in Florence, Italy. He was frustrated with the limitations of the harpsichord, the most popular keyboard instrument of his day.

The main issue was a lack of dynamic control. The harpsichord plucked its strings, meaning every note was played at the same volume, no matter how hard you pressed the key.

Cristofori's genius was in replacing the plucking quills with a complex mechanism of small hammers. For the first time, a player could change the volume from soft to loud just by the force of their touch.

He called his creation an "arpicembalo che fà il piano e il forte," which translates to a "harpsichord that can play soft and loud." This was eventually shortened to pianoforte, and later, simply piano.

Despite this incredible innovation, his invention was largely ignored in his home country of Italy during his lifetime. The musical world just wasn't ready for it.

It wasn't until after Cristofori's death in 1731 that his design was studied and championed, particularly by German instrument makers who saw its potential and helped it gain popularity across Europe.

Today, only three of Cristofori's original pianos are known to have survived, preserving the birth of an instrument that would change music forever.
