Record of the day: Hank Williams - "Sings Kaw-Liga and other Humorous Songs", 1965. "Kaw-Liga" was my first introduction to the world of Hank Williams, coming via the Residents who did an inspired cover version with a pretty tasty rhythm section in 1986. Following it back to Hank was pretty eye-opening for me as a teenager, since, at that time, I would have considered country music to be one of a handful of music styles that I was definitely not into. But Hank with his homespun story-tellin' and hillbilly melodies offered something a bit different to "Islands in the Stream" and whatever else they were calling country music at the time. I also couldn't help being impressed that someone who couldn't read or write and spent most of their waking hours intoxicated in some form or another was able to write some many goddamn songs. This hard-living lifestyle took its toll, though, with Hank passing away at 29, just a few years after becoming a star. This 1965 compilation contains 12 nuggets from Hank, including his last single, "I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive", and serves a nice introduction to his world. - Jeff
