In a world where deities demand the highest sacrifices in the name of power, two opposing island nations have reached a stalemate. Ships made of bones from monsters of legend are dwindling in an ongoing and vicious war. To those of the Hundred Isles, ships mean power. Without them, life as they know it cannot exist, but with materials becoming more scarce by the day, this future seems unstoppable.
That is until whisper of a sea dragon is heard among the colonies. To kill this beast and harvest its bones would provide a monumental advantage to whichever nation managed the feat.
Meas Gilbyrn has a different vision though. One of peace, where bone ships are no longer a threat from either nation. Joron's short command of the black ship ends swiftly when Meas commanders it for her cause, and a ship of those condemned to death set out to save the last sea dragon.

I have to thank my wonderful husband for this read. For my first sea based fantasy it has set the bar very high. I loved the twists on common lore that really helped set this world apart from others I have read before. Barker brought a fresh scene to many different myths and legends. Joron's character development has been one of my favourites to read and I'm really excited to see where the next chapter takes his crew in their quest to end the war between The Hundred Isles and Gaunt Islands.

It may be an unpopular opinion but this one didn't catch my interest in the slightest. I can appreciate the writing, and the story Delia Owens was trying to tell, however it felt like this book just couldn't decide what genre it wanted to be. I wanted to love this one. Kya deserved to have her story told, but she deserved better than this.

Faced with telling her ailing father and little sister that they have lost their only source of income all seems lost, even to optimistic Evie, until that is she stumbles into (or rather onto) a new employer. The only problem is that he's Rennedawn's greatest threat, The Villian.
Coming to terms with the fact that she would do anything for her family (the decent pay check certainly helps) Evie accepts The Villian's offer to employ her as his assistant and thus begins her double life, attempting to balance her morals with her new bosses goals.
Juggling her growing feelings for the one man she shouldn't fall for and a quest to find a mole within The Villian's inner circle, Evie must do everything she can to keep her boss alive, because boy does she need this job.

I'll admit fantasy rom-coms are not usually my thing but having followed on tiktok for the longest time I was hyped for this book and boy, it did not disappoint! Maehrer wasn't kidding when she said this was a book to make you laugh out loud. I laughed, I gasped, I shed tears for Evie and The Villian(TM). Maehrer has written such a down to earth, relatable character in Evie. She isn't magical, or trained to kill dragons, she's just a girl, doing everything to can to support her family and keep a smile on her face even in times when that feels like the hardest thing on the planet to do. Not only did I finish ATTV in one sitting, you bet you ass I've pre-ordered book 'Apprenctice to The Villian' already. Excited as hell to see what happens with Evie and The Villian(TM)'s story in this next instalment.

Set in the late 1800's, children of tragic backgrounds with extraordinary gifts are known as Talents. Found all over the world and brought to a crumbling institute north of Edinburgh, overseen by a strange and ageless doctor, they are given a home and taught to hone their abilities.
Frank Coulson and Alice Quicke are tasked with bringing two such children - Charlie and Marlowe - back from America. However they quickly discover they are not alone in their quest to find these orphans, and the thing hunting them has the power to upend the world as they know it.
As the secrets within the institute begin to come forth, Charlie and Marlowe must discover the truth behind Cairndale Institute, and the monsters that stalk them in the dark.

Miro developes both incredible characters and a haunting world in this first instalment of The Talents Troligy. The twists and turns, suspicion, and hidden agendas make a suspenseful and beautifully written historical fiction. Nothing is as it seems at Cairndale Institute, children are monsters, monsters are saviours, and everyone has a secret that they are willing to take to the grave.
