In a world where deities demand the highest sacrifices in the name of power, two opposing island nations have reached a stalemate. Ships made of bones from monsters of legend are dwindling in an ongoing and vicious war. To those of the Hundred Isles, ships mean power. Without them, life as they know it cannot exist, but with materials becoming more scarce by the day, this future seems unstoppable.
That is until whisper of a sea dragon is heard among the colonies. To kill this beast and harvest its bones would provide a monumental advantage to whichever nation managed the feat.
Meas Gilbyrn has a different vision though. One of peace, where bone ships are no longer a threat from either nation. Joron's short command of the black ship ends swiftly when Meas commanders it for her cause, and a ship of those condemned to death set out to save the last sea dragon.
I have to thank my wonderful husband for this read. For my first sea based fantasy it has set the bar very high. I loved the twists on common lore that really helped set this world apart from others I have read before. Barker brought a fresh scene to many different myths and legends. Joron's character development has been one of my favourites to read and I'm really excited to see where the next chapter takes his crew in their quest to end the war between The Hundred Isles and Gaunt Islands.
