πŸ“š Where Truth Ends πŸ“š

I was completely hooked from the opening scene of Mark Smith's latest novel. It has everything you could want in a suspense-filled crime story:
πŸ“š Fast paced
πŸ“š Surprising twists
πŸ“š Believable and relatable characters
πŸ“š Absolutely loved the Aussie setting
When I wasn't reading this story I felt like I was under surveillance, I was so entrenched in this mystery and the paranoia!

Very excited to have Mark coming down to Meeniyan next month on July 10th with Sarah Bailey.

Tickets available in store and online now 😊

Meg Maher thought she was doing the right thing. Now she's on the run.

When a peaceful climate protest ends with a violent explosion in the city centre, every member of the protest group becomes a suspect. The incident is declared a terrorist attack.

But the authorities aren't the only ones hunting Meg.

Scared and alone, Meg seeks refuge with her father, Luke, knowing that every word she says puts him in danger too. But as the terrorism investigation closes in, Meg is forced to question everything: her friends, her cause, even herself. Was her group of activists infiltrated from the start? Or has someone twisted their mission beyond recognition?

What happens when the truth is the first thing to burn?

Where Truth Ends is a taut, character-driven thriller by award-winning author of Three Boys Gone Mark Smith, about what happens when the fight for change becomes a fight for survival.

πŸ“š Local Author Spotlight πŸ“š

Kath Gilbert, local writer and school teacher, has released her non-fiction book Empty Roads, Empty Promises: The Forgotten Blockade of Razorback Mountain.

After being asked to write a brief history on the Razorback Truck blockade, Kath was intrigued and dove deeper interviewing truckies who had been there and still had passion and anger in their voices. She then realised she needed to write a book!

BLURB:
Empty Roads, Empty Promises takes us back to the 1970s. It was a decade of 'mutton chop' sideburns, Skyhooks songs, protests and trucks rolling along the Hume Highway over Razorback Mountain. Truckies were hauling food, livestock, fuel and everything else that kept Australia running. Even during the economically unsustainable times, owner-drivers kept rolling. That was until 5pm on April 2nd, 1979 when five truck drivers barricaded the road, forcing all others to stop in what was labelled an act of civil insurrection.

Like the Eureka Stockade of 1854 and the Shearers' Strike of 1891, it was not a rebellion of privileges - rather a stand for fairness. It was a demand for the removal of the unfair, biased rules and regulations which discriminately forced honest truck drivers to pay a road user tax. It was a battle to stop the unjust incarceration of hard-working truckies.

This revealing book takes us behind closed doors into the private meetings. Anecdotes and memories of hardship, deception, larrikinism and camaraderie tell a quintessential Australian tale - the underdog taking on government and corporations. Members of the Razorback Committee, truck drivers, wives and media personalities share their recollections from across the ten tumultuous days. They give their thoughts on the still debated question, 'Did they win?'.

Empty Roads, Empty Promises is available now in store and online. Keep an eye out for Kath's release party being held in July 😊

πŸ“š School Author Visit πŸ“š

Yesterday we welcomed Jess Racklyeft and George Ivanoff to Meeniyan Primary School to share their love of reading, writing and drawing with the students.

Last year Nice Stack of Books was lucky enough to be one of 41 stores to receive a grant from Penguin Australia Publishing to go towards inspiring the junior readers in our community.

When asked if they would be interested in donating their time to travel from Melbourne to chat with Meeniyan PS students, they jumped at the chance!

Jess Racklyeft had the Prep, 1 & 2s captivated from beginning to end. They were lucky enough to hold her CBCA award medal as she shared her illustrating secrets. The children were so impressed with their drawings of Australian nocturnal animals! The young man next to me was afraid to start drawing, then was bubbling over with pride as he showed me his sketches. πŸ₯°

George Ivanoff had the grades 3-6s completely enthralled as he shared his writing process and how he comes up with his story ideas. The whiteboard image of his planning for the You Choose books blew their minds! The students loved picking the path as George read from You Choose...Prehistoric Peril, throw in some gruesome stories and they were very happy kids.

Thanks to the Penguin Aus grant, every single child was given a selection of books by Australian authors, including Jess and George to take home and enjoy.

I cannot thank Jess and George enough for donating their time and energy and giving these kids such an enjoyable time and hopefully sparking their love of reading and writing.

You can always find books by and .george at Nice Stack of Books 😊🧑
