This is Archie and he is the most gorgeous, loving dog. Times like these pets can be a great boost to our mental health. They bond to you, love you unconditionally and are a great companion to get you out on walks and can help you look after you, even without you knowing. Dogs, like any pet, are a big responsibility, require work, love, attention and care but if you are up for the challenge, could be just what you are looking for. We can’t imagine our lives without him and patting him is quite therapeutic!

The WHO announced today that they believe the COVID-19 pandemic will last less than 2 years. Potentially 2 years of being in and out of waves, lockdowns, mask-wearing and social distancing. What we are going through will change us and it will feel tough at times. There will be good times, family memories and laughter with friends. There will also be loneliness, sadness, feeling lost, uncertain or anxious. We all need to find ways to protect our mental health. One way is to spend 5 minutes filling in a gratitude journal to reflect on the day, noting down what you have enjoyed and what felt like a challenge. Sometimes noting things down and seeing it on paper is all you need to feel empowered, wake up the next day and try again. No day is the same, but the more we are conscious of how we are feeling, the better we can navigate through these tough times.

How to burn candles so you aren’t left with wax on the sides!

Unlike the rules of fight club, the rules of burning a candle should be known to everyone who loves a good candle!

To eliminate the smell of smoke from your candle or melt the wax so you get very little wax left on the sides as your candle burns down, follow these simple tips:

1. Every single time you go to light a candle, trim the wick so it is only a few (3-4) millimetres long. This stops the wick from mushrooming, which then eliminates ash going into your wax or getting a smokey scent.

2. Every candle is different, however make sure you burn your candle (particularly the first time) for at least two hours or when you see the surface has liquified from one side to the other (a pooling effect). This helps to melt the wax more evenly, letting you get more of the scent and to melt the wax on the sides. Even if there is some wax on the sides after burning, if you continue to burn this way, the wax on the sides will eventually melt (at least 9 times out of 10 it does)

3. Never burn a candle for more than approx. 4 hours or once you see a thick layer of pooled wax. It can melt your wax unevenly and reduce the burn time.

4. Keep your candle away from drafty areas. If you notice your candle flickering, it’s best to move it away to where you see it glowing continuously. This helps to create an even burn.

It has been a surreal couple of months watching a pandemic unfold in front of our eyes. The fresh new challenges every single one of us has had to face in one way or another has been new, heightened or filled with uncertainty. There have been highs, lows, boredom, bouts of creativity, laughter, tears and everything else in between. We have all had to step up and take on more day after day.

So now that things are easing, the challenges we faced, the way we felt in lock down, is all starting to shift. We are heading into a transitional period. However the sense of uncertainty still lingers. Things will go right, things will go wrong and that is ok. No matter the way you feel day to day, there will be a sense of understanding and familiarity that starts to take shape.

This has been a period of changes, big and small. Change is hard, particularly when it happens to us rather than us initiating it, because of the uncertain and seemingly uncontrolling situations it places us in. Allow the time and space to adapt at your pace. If it is all getting too much, put the kettle on and grab a cuppa. Sometimes the most simplistic moments can bring clarity and a new approach.
