NSW lets your e-bike ride the bus lane, with a ten-tonne bus doing 60 behind you. Your help? Gone at 25.

Bike riders can use NSW bus lanes, transit lanes and truck lanes, just not bus-only or tram-only lanes. An empty city bus weighs more than 10 tonnes.

NSW caps e-bike motor power and limits assisted speed to 25 km/h. The bus driver has a timetable. You become the obstacle in the one lane you're given, so riders get pushed onto shared paths with people walking. Cyclist deaths rose 32.4% in the 12 months to December 2025.

A 50,000-dollar car loan is about 230 dollars a week. For five years. And the law makes sure plenty of us feel we need one.

At 8% over five years, that's just over 1,000 dollars a month and nearly 11,000 dollars in interest, before fuel, rego or insurance.

Now the e-bike: about 1 kWh per 100 km. A week of commuting costs well under a dollar in power.

So why do so many people sign the loan anyway? Because the law caps the alternative. NSW caps e-bike motor power and limits assisted speed to 25 km/h. Beside cars doing 60, that makes the e-bike the obstacle, so riders get pushed onto shared paths, or they give up and buy the car. Cyclist deaths rose 32.4% in the 12 months to December 2025.

Every one of those car trips burns fuel Australia imports up to 90% of, in an engine that turns only a quarter of it into motion.

A fully licensed driver can legally take two tonnes out at a blood alcohol of 0.049. Your e-bike's help? Cut at exactly 25.

Australia's drink-driving limit for a full licence is 0.05. Below it, you're legal. Learners and P-platers must be at zero, and that's right. But for most drivers, the law accepts a small margin, in the heaviest thing on the road.

Danger is mass times speed. Two tonnes at 60 carries about 100 times the crash energy of an e-bike and rider at 25. 1,314 people died on Australian roads in the 12 months to December 2025. Cyclist deaths rose 32.4%.

Australia had no fuel-efficiency standard for new cars until 2025. Your e-bike? Capped since the day it became legal.

The government itself said that, along with Russia, we were one of the only advanced economies without one. It still covers new cars only. We back it. It's a start.

Meanwhile Australia imports up to 90% of its fuel, into engines that turn only 25-30% of it into motion. An e-bike goes about 100 km on 1 kWh, and it can run on the rooftop solar that one in three Australian homes already has.

Yet the law clamped it first. NSW caps e-bike motor power and limits assisted speed to 25 km/h beside cars doing 60, so plenty of riders give up and drive.
