With the pending opening of our first physical escape room 🔍, we thought we'd start a series exploring escape game topics and providing advice on strategies for success when playing... Outside the Box: Cracking the Code on What Makes Escape Rooms Awesome!

Our first topic is SIGNPOSTING. Signposting is used by puzzle designers to subtly guide players towards a puzzle, prop or a clue. Signposts can be environmental clues such as strategically placed lights that attract attention to a particular object, a sound that draws players into a new area or brings particular themes to mind, evocative fragrances, or props that foreshadow puzzles yet to come.

Game masters and in-game characters sometimes provide signposting too, with their comments, postures, actions or even clothing!

The trick to making the most of signposting is to pay close attention to everything in the room and ask yourself why it might be there. Repeated sets of colours? That one flickering lamp? Unusual background music? A game character playing an endless game of cards? All of these could be signposts and are worthy of closer scrutiny. If you're worried about chasing red herrings (a topic for another post!) check in with your game master to make sure you're on the right track.

Tech Talk - PixaPlay

Our PixaPlay system uses a combination of ultra-short-throw projectors to produce large-scale images with great sharpness, and 3D motion-tracking cameras to follow player movements precisely in 3 dimensions. Response times are super-fast, ensuring that players get an instant reaction to their movements, and the cameras build a skeleton for each human they detect, to allow the games to accurately map graphics directly over player images.

We'll be looking at sourcing or developing advanced games in the future, but for now, our content features simple games and sensory experiences suitable for a younger audience.

Accessibility at Worlds Beyond.

We strive to maximise accessibility in our venue and in our activities. From our zero-step entry and automatic doors to our wide corridors and doorways, wheelchair- friendly lobby and accessible bathroom, we aim to ensure people with varied mobility can engage in our spaces.

Our VR games can be played by most people, and PixaPlay offers a great, easy to play alternative for those wanting more simple games and sensory experiences.

We regularly host disability support groups and we are a member of the Australian Companion Card program. We're happy to try to accommodate modifications you may need to participate.
