What would surprise people about how we grow our stock?

One of the things I’m most proud of at Harmony is that we don’t just talk about growing plants differently — we actually do it.

Our production nursery is built around a simple philosophy: work with nature, not against it.

We choose not to use synthetic fertilisers in the production of our Harmony-grown stock. Instead, we focus on building healthy plants through good growing practices, quality inputs and a living growing environment.

And that’s where our good bugs come in.

Beneficial insects are an important part of our approach to managing pests naturally. Rather than reaching for a broad-spectrum chemical every time we see an insect, we want to understand what’s happening in the nursery and encourage the insects that help us keep the balance.

It’s not about pretending that growing plants is completely pest-free. It’s about creating an environment where healthy plants, beneficial insects and good horticultural practices can work together.

For us, being chem-free is more than a marketing phrase. It’s part of our values and the way we want to operate our nursery.

We believe you can grow beautiful, healthy plants while being more mindful of the environment, our staff, our customers and the wider ecosystem.

There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes before a plant arrives on our retail benches — and sometimes the smallest workers are doing some of the biggest jobs.

Meet the good bugs working at Harmony.

It was great to be back on ABC Hobart Gardening Talkback with Mel Bush this morning, chatting all things gardening and answering questions from gardeners around Tasmania.

We covered some timely winter topics, including planting blueberries, getting on top of oxalis, and the benefits of miniature fruit trees — giving you normal-sized, delicious fruit but on a smaller-growing tree, making them perfect for smaller gardens.

We also talked about leaf curl and getting the timing right to protect your stone fruit, along with codling moth and how to stay ahead of this frustrating pest.

Apple Duo Planting – two varieties, one tree

I’m always looking for ways to make the most of the space we have in the garden, and planting an apple duo is one of my favourite techniques for smaller orchards.

In this reel, I’m planting two of my favourite apple varieties that are suitable cross-pollinators. Rather than planting them separately, we’re planting them back-to-back in the same hole, with around 15–20cm between the trunks. I’ve worked some complete organic fertiliser (COF) through the soil, planted the two trees together and then we’ll train and prune them to grow as one.

The big advantage is that you get two varieties growing in the space normally taken up by one tree, while also giving yourself the benefit of cross-pollination and, hopefully, a great crop of both varieties.

We’ve had some really positive feedback from customers using this technique, and in our experience it has also proved considerably more successful than choosing a double-grafted tree, where one of the grafts can sometimes fail.

So, if you’re short on space but still want to grow more than one apple variety, this is a technique well worth considering.

Follow along with the reel and I’ll show you just how easy it is to plant your own apple duo.

🌿 A hidden winter gem growing right here in Lauderdale! 🌿

While out and about, Kate came across this beautiful Garrya thriving in the very sandy soils of Lauderdale. It’s a fantastic example of just how hardy and reliable these evergreen shrubs can be, even in challenging coastal conditions.

In this week’s feature, Kate explains what makes Garrya such a valuable winter plant and also compares it with the famous ‘James Roof’ selection. If you’re looking for the ultimate winter display, ‘James Roof’ is renowned for producing exceptionally long, silvery tassels that can reach up to 30cm, making it one of the most spectacular winter-flowering shrubs you can grow.

🎥 Join Kate as she shares why Garrya deserves a place in more Tasmanian gardens and how choosing the right variety can make an already beautiful plant even more impressive.

Have you spotted a Garrya flowering this winter? We’d love to hear where! 🌿
