Human of ickle Vol. 5
Sharna, Aka bub of ickle team
Aka Tia's mum
Sharna is our youngest ickle team member, also our very own in house nurse
From my earliest of memories I have made art. For most of my life I have constantly been “making” (as my 5 year old self would say). Digging through my designated “craft” drawer at my grandparents house to find some sticky tape or gathering copious amounts of cardboard from the recycling to make a tower (sorry mum).
In my angsty teen years, my very favourite art teacher once pulled me aside and said “Sharna your art is cool but you’re really angry and have a lot to say”. Well to my recollection it was something like that. Ever since, I have been determined to create art that has something to say.
Through my current nursing degree and my past work in the healthcare industry, i have experienced a proportional amount of sexism and misogyny, as most do. The deeply entrenched stereotypes of “your duty as a woman” is blatant. To listen, but not be heard. A study conducted in England revealed that women at 50% more likely to be misdiagnosed. And these statistics only increase if you’re not white… and yeah I can ramble on about this for decades.
Instead, over the past year, when you don’t see me in ickle, or studying, you could find me painting or sewing. And when my canvases took over not only my bedroom and my wardrobe… but my entire house, I knew it was probably time for my next project.
My first solo exhibition “The wallpaper” a collection of mixed media artworks depicting my (hysterical) rage of the patriarchal world we are living in. I have spilled all my thoughts, emotions and pain into this collection. As a bit of a joker, it’s a little tough being so serious, but my message is important and vulnerable.
Sooo on the Saturday the 2nd 6-8pm at the Stanmore corner gallery… you’ll find me and a lot of quite thought provoking stuff. I hope that people will come along and have conversations, learn and engage in the ways we think as a collective.
You can also come from the 3rd-6th 12-6pm if you want to have a less chaotic atmosphere.
If you’re not hysterical you’re not paying attention…
