Field notes ~ week thirty four

Oh my goodness last week (and the weekend) were huge here on the farm. So much progress, I’m so grateful but beyond exhausted!

Normally I do all of the flower growing alone, a part of my business that is both empowering and a fun challenge but also very overwhelming, especially when weather or health mean projects get delayed.

But over the month of August I’ve had a few helping hands come and help me get back on track after a difficult winter.

I am so excited to say in August we have added another 13 beds, with just 4 left to finish up my field expansion for the year. This has given me so much more space to be able to grow more local seasonal crops this summer season, and I can’t wait to share the abundance with you all.

None of this would be possible without your support, all these expansions have been funded by bouquets sold last summer & Mother’s Day. So thank you, for choosing to support local flowers, I am so grateful. Here’s hoping for another beautiful and successful summer season this year to fund a big native garden next winter 🤞🌱

As a small business one of the most rewarding parts of my work is collaborating with other small businesses who choose to support local. Local families with big dreams and visions making our communities better places with a lot of hard work.

It’s so special to watch each other grow and succeed over time, and at the moment both my stockists are making some amazing steps forward.

Mamash has just opened their gorgeous new cafe and farm shop space, and IGA TWEED HEADS has been busily renovating their fridges, deli counter as well as the rest of the store. Both stock many other small local producers and makers like myself, so if you feel like trying a new spot this week come and check them out!

field notes - week 32

After months of rain we are finally getting glorious sunshine and that means the field expansion is in full swing. Hopefully before summer arrives I’m aiming to double my growing space to have lots more blooms to share this summer. It’s a big job but a very satisfying one.

Luckily for me my family was visiting from the UK this week so I’m between beach trips and catch ups and my flower deliveries we moved 150 sleepers onto the property in a rented Ute. Normally I have them delivered by truck but it’s just too muddy for a truck to come onto the farm yet, and I’m running out of time to get the plants in the ground for October flowers.

The original plan last summer was to finish the field expansion in June, with plenty of time to plant up this week in early August.

But Mother Nature had other plans, so spring plantings will be a week or two late but hopefully will still happen this month with another couple weeks of dry on the forecast🤞

600 dahlia cuttings arrived this week, and I have a greenhouse full of seedlings ready to go once the beds are built next week. Things are shaping up for a gorgeous summer of local blooms!

As well as bed building, the sunshine has brought on lots of spring harvests, including lace, snaps, poppies, sweet peas, jonquils and strawflowers. There’s more statice, delph, lace and hopefully foxgloves coming up in the next few weeks too 😍

Hope everyone else is enjoying the sunshine as much as I am, time to get the housework done quickly so I can get another few beds planted up this afternoon ✨

Field notes ~ week thirty

What a rollercoaster of a winter season it’s been so far. Rain rain rain then a few short days of dry weather to try and get it all done. Lots of frustration, mud and slow progress on the field expansion but in between it all a few beautiful moments too.

Buckets of beautiful stems are starting to come in from my wonderful grower friends fields 🤍 and the first spring blooms are on their way on my field too, sweet peas, jonquils, poppies, snaps & lace.

The cows are doing a fantastic job of mowing where it’s too wet for the tractor and are a constant source of entertainment. They’re always up to no good and always plotting an escape route to the flower seedlings but so far the electric fence has held up better than the barbed wire 🙄

Tonight I took you on a little tour of the early spring flower field on stories if you’d like to watch, I also cut my first little bowl of blooms in many months. It smells so good, I wish you could all smell it too.

In the coming weeks the field expansion will continue when I can get a chance and some dry weather, block three it was due to be completed next week but somehow I’m not sure that will happen. Please cross your fingers and send some warm dry but not too warm or dry sunshine my way so I can get it done before spring plantings in August 🤞✨
