SEAN-PAUL STEPHENS APPOINTED INDEPENDENT DIRECTOR OF ECONOMIC JUSTICE AUSTRALIA

BY TANGIORA HINAKI AND KALMIA SAMBO

Sean-Paul Stephens says his new role with Economic Justice Australia is a chance to support national reform while bringing governance experience shaped by years of working alongside First Nations communities.

Stephens is the CEO of the Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation and has recently been appointed as an independent director of Economic Justice Australia.

He said his work in Ieramugadu-Roebourne and across the Pilbara had shown him the real impact of unfair systems.

“I think we see every day what happens when we don’t have economic justice and we don’t have a fair and equitable system, access to social security and other forms of economic wellbeing,” Stephens said.

“I was really drawn to Economic Justice Australia because of their mission to see a fair social security system across Australia.”

Stephens has worked with Ngarluma people in the Pilbara for the past decade, as well as with First Nations communities in the Northern Territory and Victoria.

He said those experiences had made it clear that access to economic justice remained unequal for many Aboriginal people.

“It doesn’t take much to spend time in communities like Ieramugadu and see that access to economic justice is not fair and hasn’t been working, and reform is required,” he said.

As an independent director, Stephens said his role was not to represent one group or community, but to support the board with governance, strategy and risk management.

“The role of an independent is, It’s an independent person that comes in, and he’s not there to represent members or a specific cohort of people, but to support the board in its governance journey.”

Stephens said good governance was the backbone of strong organisations, from large corporations to small not-for-profits.

As part of Reconciliation Action Week, we was honoured to deliver a Bush Medicine Workshop to the women at Roebourne Regional Prison.

The women were fully engaged and immersed in the workshop, taking time to slow down, reconnect, and ground themselves through culture, traditional knowledge, and wellbeing discussions. It was wonderful to see the positive impact that cultural connection can have on healing and self-reflection.

As a special gift, each participant received a Minyjagarra jami Balm to take home. The ladies were incredibly grateful and happy to receive the balm, with many expressing their appreciation for the opportunity to learn about bush medicine and cultural healing.

At Pilbara Bush Remedy, we believe that culture is medicine and that strong women help build strong communities. 💛🌿

We are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming interest in our upcoming Women’s Wellbeing Camp Out on Country.

Our team is currently working through logistics and developing a meaningful itinerary filled with cultural, healing, and wellbeing activities for our beautiful women. We are also inviting strong, culturally minded women from within our community to take part and lead as facilitators, sharing their knowledge, experience, and strengths with participants.

Some of the activities we are hoping to include are:

✨ Local Artwork and Painting Workshop
✨ Visits to Women’s Sacred Sites
✨ Bush Medicine Workshop
✨ Bushfood Cooking and Damper Making
✨ Women’s General Health Checks

This invitation is open to all women, from all cultures, races, and backgrounds. We believe that bringing women together in a respectful and culturally safe environment creates opportunities for learning, healing, understanding, and connection.

Costs will be involved, and we are working hard to keep the camp as affordable as possible while still delivering a high-quality and meaningful experience.

This is more than just a camp — it is an opportunity for women to reconnect with themselves, each other, culture, and Country. Our vision is for this to become the first of many ongoing camps, creating regular opportunities for women to gather, share knowledge, strengthen wellbeing, and build lasting connections.

📅 Tentative Dates: 28–30 August 2026

Thank you for your patience while we finalise the details. We are excited to bring this vision to life and create something truly special for the women of our region.

🌿 Women’s On Country Wellbeing Camp – EOI Update 🌿

We are incredibly grateful and humbled by the overwhelming response to our Women’s On Country Wellbeing Camp Expression of Interest.

The number of women wanting to be part of this experience has highlighted just how important it is for women to have opportunities to come together, connect, heal, and spend time on Country.

We are currently gathering and collating all Expressions of Interest into a participant database and spreadsheet so that we can contact everyone directly with updates as planning progresses.

At this stage, we are working through logistics, participant numbers, facilitator availability, camp requirements, and overall costings to ensure the experience is safe, meaningful, and accessible. Due to the high level of interest, it is likely that the camp will be delivered across two separate trips to accommodate as many women as possible while maintaining a quality experience for all participants.

While there will be costs involved to cover camping expenses, catering, resources, and other camp requirements, we are committed to keeping these costs as low as possible. Our goal is to make this experience affordable and accessible so that as many women as possible can participate and benefit from this special time on Country.

Away from the distractions of town, this camp will provide an opportunity for women to reconnect with themselves, each other, culture, and Country in a supportive and empowering environment.

Through shared experiences on Country, participants will have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships, strengthen their wellbeing, learn cultural knowledge, and connect with other strong women in a safe and nurturing space. Together, we will create opportunities for healing, reflection, laughter, and growth while embracing the wisdom, strength, and beauty of Country.

We appreciate your patience while we work through the planning process and look forward to sharing more information soon.

Thank you for your support, enthusiasm, and belief in this vision. We can’t wait to bring women together on Country to build connections, create memories, and strengthen one another through culture, community, and wellbeing.
