After plenty of failed attempts and some questionable choices with lures and gear (my wife’s still not always on board with the obsession), when everything goes wrong but you still push on—that’s when you realize fishing is more than a hobby. It’s a deeper, almost primal drive. It’s not rational, but it’s real.
The emotional roller coaster begins weeks before you ever hit the water—studying knots, weather, water temps, currents, lures…the list goes on. Then, finally, that moment: tuna busting a meter out of the water, like something out of a David Attenborough documentary, your nerves sparking with excitement.
Hooking a big one triggers instant worry—will the knots hold, will the fish bust me off, or worse, will a shark take it? But when the gaff finally sinks in and you see that fish coming over the rail, it’s pure joy and relief. It’s an incredible moment—and it takes a team to land it.

Full video on YouTube- I’ve been working hard chasing Tuna. After plenty of failed attempts and some questionable choices with lures and gear (my wife’s not always on board with the obsession), I’ve learned that when things go wrong and you still push on—that’s when you know fishing is a deeper, almost primal drive. It’s not rational, but it’s real.

On this trip, I needed help. The wheels literally came off. The boat motor steering arm snapped, the transducer broke off, and yet nothing was going to stop me. Luckily, I’ve always felt blessed—call it luck, call it whatever you want—and this time was no different.

The boat’s steering arm snapping on the drive down? Way better than it happening offshore. A wheel falling off after I’d already launched the boat? Double win—it could’ve been a disaster if it happened on the main road, and I still got to go fishing. The transducer broke, but the boat was fine. Another win.

But honestly, the best part wasn’t just getting out on the water—it was having a proper laugh with Andrew and Simon. Just top blokes. These are the moments you remember.

Caravan or court?????? With everyone Support we’ve decided that we’re gonna go to court. I just done feel that it’s ok for council to push people around for no reasonable reason. So looks like no caravan for us for now but hopefully we will get to keep our home. What hearts the most is that after all the paper work it done. We are allowed to live here and operate here. It just time and paperwork. So it’s a complete waste of money and a misuse of taxpayers money.

Big Tuna is getting Evicted from 8 Snapper Rd Huskisson. Council has just issued a “stop use order” which requires us to move out of our home in 60 days. Full story on YouTube at BigTunaLife. Sorry this is not fun but it’s what’s happening right now. And if you have ever have issue with local council you will laugh at how ridiculous council process can be.

Simo is a true local legend—he’s been competing in fishing tournaments for over 30 years and was at the helm of the former Jervis Bay fishing charter Simo’s Afloat for just as long. As the former president of the Jervis Bay Game Fishing Club, his knowledge and passion for the sport run deep.So it was a real privilege to be invited aboard his boat—to learn from one of the pros, share stories, and gain a deeper understanding of game fishing. Moments like these are what the sport is all about.We also want to give a big shoutout to Matt and the team from the Canberra Game Fishing Club for hosting the Bermagui Yellowfin Tournament. The amount of work that goes into organising an event like this—securing sponsors, bringing people together, and creating such a fun, competitive atmosphere—is no small feat.
