THE BANKSIA. Did you know?

They evolved with fire - their woody seed pods (follicles) are sealed shut and only open after the heat of a bushfire passes through.

Banksias are a major food source for honeyeaters and possums, producing so much nectar that Aboriginal peoples used the flower spikes as a natural drink by soaking them in water.

They’re ancient - the Banksia genus has been in Australia for around 60 million years, long before the continent fully dried out.

Meet Ron from Kirup, WA. 🌿

Here’s what his daughter, had to say about her Dad’s green sanctuary.

“His garden is his happy place - he’s not doing it for any other reason other than enjoying it and keeping him busy through retirement. He grew up in the country so had always been a green thumb garden lover. He did plant a few things with his florist daughter in mind of course, specifically the proteacae garden with lots of proteas, leucadendrons and some banksia species. But also because those varieties grow really well in Kirup where he lives. Every year for his birthday or Father’s Day I usually buy him a new native plant to try squeeze into the already full garden - but he will always find room. He’s always propagating and multiplying things by cutting branches off and in his famous words “stick enough in the ground and one will eventually work”, which usually rings true.

He’s coming up to 10 years on this property and that particular protea garden is probably about 8 years old.

He lives a 2.5hour drive away so I can’t always rely on his plants for work but I do make sure to travel down and forage whenever I can and use it for special big projects.”

Native to Western Australia, Anigozanthos gets its name from the shape of its unopened flowers - tubular, furred, and slightly curved. It grows in sandy soils and dry scrub, and it blooms in the colours of a bushfire sunset. Almost entirely endemic to Australia, found almost nowhere else on earth.

Amy Baker grows cut flowers in Hopkins Creek - just down the road from us. Dahlias, poppies, delphiniums. Alongside her partner Dane, and a deep sense of responsibility for the land they tend.
