Did you know that the first CWA Gift shop in Hobart opened in 1942 in rented rooms located at 44 Murray Street followed by a move to Mathers Lane in 1949. In 1951 a building at 165 Elizabeth Street was purchased at a cost of seven thousand, five hundred pounds (approx. $15,000) and within 10 years the building was completely free of debt.

CWA members would bring their goods into the shop to sell on consignment, helping them and their families through tough times.

When members join they are given a number, and this is the only identifier on their products. So rather than ask for Mrs Smith's lovely strawberry jam, the request is for number 007’s strawberry jam (no spies involved we promise!) This iconic shop alongside other CWA shops across the state has amassed a vast network of local, national, and international customers.

Our shop has been trading for84 years!
