Did the NZ Alpine Team accidentally reveal what’s next? 👀 You asked, they answered.

Back in June, the NZAT joined us for Design Lab, our 48-hour workshop where we get their feedback on gear they’ve been putting through its paces in the mountains, and work with them to make it even better.

We had plenty of questions for Matt Scholes, Maddy Whittaker and Jaz Morris... but we weren’t the only ones! You sent through a few questions of your own, and this is what they had to say.

If your down jacket has been on high rotation this winter, now’s a good time to show it a little love. It’s not as daunting as it sounds, we promise!

We’ve got the full step-by-step guide in our bio for the detail lovers. But if you’re already marching to the washing machine, jacket in hand, here’s your quick-hit guide below:

1️⃣ Pre-wash prep. Zip it up, close the pockets (check for rogue tissues unless you want to feel deep, deep regret), and loosen elastic cords.

2️⃣ Pick the right detergent. Nikwax Down Wash Direct® = good. Regular laundry detergent = bad.

3️⃣ Wash those 8-month old porridge stains away. Cold or lukewarm water (30°C max), gentle cycle.

4️⃣ Puff it back up. Turn it inside out and tumble dry on cold to low heat with dryer balls or tennis balls (clean ones, we beg). Air drying? Lay flat, shake occasionally, and wait patiently (like, reaaally patiently)! It can take up to 48 hours, so be sure it’s fully dry before storing it away.

Your jacket’s looked after you all winter. Consider this returning the favour. 🏔️

It’s changed with the times, but it’s always been built for the same thing: reliable warmth when the temperature drops. From the pages of our first apparel catalogue to the version hanging in stores today, it’s been shaped by years of experience in the outdoors.

How to wash your down jacket 🧼

Step 1: Prep it.
Zip up all zips, empty the pockets and loosen any drawcords. Got mud, sunscreen or a mystery trail stain? Give any grubby spots a quick pre-clean with a specialised down wash before it goes in the machine.

Step 2: Use the right wash.
Wash on a gentle cycle (max 30°C) with a specialised down wash like Nikwax Down Wash Direct®. Avoid regular detergent, fabric softener and bleach, which can strip the down and reduce its loft.

Step 3: Wash gently.
Use a front-loader if possible, or pop your jacket in a laundry bag if using a top-loader with an agitator. Wash on its own or with similar lightweight gear.

Step 4: Tumble dry.
Start by spreading your jacket out on a towel, then roll the excess water out carefully — never wring or twist the jacket! Tumble dry the jacket inside out on a low heat with tennis balls to restore its loft.

Step 5: If you don’t have a dryer, air dry it.
Lay the jacket flat to air dry in a well-ventilated area, turning and gently shaking it regularly to redistribute the down, and allow up to 48 hours for it to dry completely.

Pro tip: A down jacket can feel surprisingly heavy when wet, so handle it with care while drying. Always check the care label on your garment before washing.

Now all that’s left to do is get back out there while winter’s still putting on a show! 🏔️

Cold nights don’t have to mean uncomfortable nights. A few simple tweaks can make a huge difference when it comes to camping in winter:

🛏️ Treat the ground as part of your sleep system.
A warm sleeping bag can only do so much if you’re losing heat through the ground. A quality sleeping mat (or even a double-mat setup) can make a bigger difference than you’d think.

🧦 Sleep with tomorrow’s clothes.
Pulling on frozen socks at sunrise is a character-building experience we’d rather skip. Pop tomorrow’s layers into your sleeping bag overnight.

🧥 Have a “moving” kit and a “camp” kit.
The layers that keep you comfortable on the trail aren’t always the layers you want once you stop moving. Keep a dry set ready for camp.

🌬️ Choose your campsite carefully.
Shelter from the wind is important, but so is avoiding spots where cold air settles overnight. And it never hurts to choose a site with morning sun!

🏔️ Know when to call it.
Winter camping can be incredible, but snow, ice and alpine terrain require additional skills, planning and judgement. Sometimes the best decision is choosing another day.

A little extra prep now means a much comfier night later.

NZAT members Liam, Jacob and Mason headed into the Mt Aspiring area earlier this month to check out a handful of potential new lines. Poor snow conditions and access challenges meant a change of plans, but good gear and a flexible mindset go a long way in the mountains. A circuit of the Bonar Glacier and a lunchtime lap on the Chocolate Fish route made for a pretty worthwhile alternative.
