‘Rethink | Remake | Refine’ exhibition at Rosny Farm is now open with an official opening tomorrow afternoon.
A new work, going back to the fundamentals of printmaking with this drawing (in two parts - archival ink + pin pricks) on Kozo paper. Remembering the gentle breeze through the trees at Fukikawaguchiko in Japan.

I recently travelled to Japan for four weeks. A key instigator was to feel inspired again, to create wildly and freely in the little time I have outside a day job.
I searched and searched for inspiration-for the contemplative and considered Japan I remembered from living there 25 years ago.
What I felt was an almost constant assault on the senses. Noise, colour, signs, objects, vying for attention in big sprawling modern grey and brown cities. I found quiet moments in country areas, places where time felt as if it stood still, that modern Japan has forgotten and left behind.
I took along a journal with me that I hardly touched until I returned home. The inspiration I found instead, was of a desire for quietness and solitude and feeling comfortable with that.
I revisited this relief print I did on linen some time ago that I never knew what to do with. After some slight modifications, it now sits under a beautiful cast iron tea pot I bought at a tea house in Kyoto.
In reflecting on that trip, I plan to be more considered, to trust my gut, enjoy making again, and create what I like first and foremost. My pieces don’t have to be perfect and orderly like past work. And I hope in the end, I’m comfortable with that.
