Perched on the side of a hill in an old woodshed looking out over the Hartley Valley, the view alone is enough to inspire you. Walking in through the workshop on your way to the gallery you realise this is the home of a working artist, and a prolific one at that. If the blacksmith forge isn’t breathing fire or the welder flashing there will be sparks somewhere as metal artist Ron Fitzpatrick bring

s to life a new creation. It might be one of his signature mirrors which are more wall art than function, like the Goddess or Celtic Queen, or he might be enclosing a large amethyst crystal into one of his wrought iron sculptures. He might even be down the side of the hill adding a new piece to his newly installed Contemplation sculpture walk. Visitors keep coming back because they know they will always find something new. Often, you will even see it being made.

“Nobody meets anyone who makes anything anymore – everything is imported,” Ron says. As well as great metal art the gallery has a room filled with exquisite handcrafted silver jewellery. Rings, earring and pendants mounted with gemstones, coral, pearls and shell. Along with a great range of art clocks the gallery has something for everyone. I love to see someone’s vision come to fruition! Galia came to me with a beautiful piece of tee tree root that was chosen for a mosaic sculpture, she had finished the sculpture but it needed a display stand so it could be admired from all angles. Galia was wrapped with the stand and once she placed her piece on said ‘it fits perfectly!’

Galia liked the rusting patina, so I removed any scale to expose the bare metal and added a solution to start the rusting.

Thank you Galia for the opportunity to help bring your creation to the potential it deserves.

Called in to the gallery the other day and was amazed at all the changes Josh has made in preparation for the knife making classes he’s going to run…
He rolled out this bit of silver for me that was smelted from a few old rings that I intend to turn into a pendant design, but more on that later….

He’s made this brilliant platform over the area where all the concrete was messed up, it almost looks like a stage, perfect for the classes.
He used to work at Luna Park and when they replaced the 6” diameter shaft on the giant Ferris’s wheel he thought “I know what I can do with that” and hey presto those short lengths of round steel in the photo are going to be mounted into the pieces of railway sleepers as knife making anvils… brilliant! Waste not, want not. Also new is this sexy knife making belt sander, (is there such a thing?) to clean up the knives after forging. Wow, what a vision, I just wish I’d met this guy 10 years earlier, boy we could have done some stuff together…..

HELP!
All you Facebook pundits out there, I need help…..
Me and the new talisman wizard Josh have been trying to sort out the handing over of what was mine and soon to be Joshes facebook and instagram page and we’re not having much luck.
We are drowning in a sea of 4 digit codes and emails…. Add to that a person with a stroke addled brain, me, and you have a match made in …… confusion!
How many blacksmiths does it take to change a light bulb?
2, but it has to want to change….

Details:
I use a Meta app called Meta Business Suite and I’m not sure what crimes I committed last life but I surely wasn’t that bad to deserve this…….
Ideally, the person to the rescue could give me a call and perhaps we could discuss it, share screenshots etc of the issues I’m having.

Hi everyone I’m Josh. I’m so excited to be part of this community and to continue doing what Ron started. Over the past 4 months, I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone, taking on a challenge I never expected and exploring my passion as a maker and artist.

Already, I’ve met so many of you who are a part of this community and I’m overwhelmed by the kindness and support I’ve received. I will do my best to live up to Ron’s incredible legacy and deliver quality pieces for all to enjoy.

There will be more updates to come and as Ron mentioned a while back, I’m planning to run classes. Let me know what you’d want to make in the comments, something along the lines of - herb chopper, fire poker, knives, silver ring or pendant, leather belt, wallet, or apron.

The Talisman Gallery is now open Friday- Sunday 10-3 until a few lease things are finalized then will be open more days. Josh, the new owner will be more that happy to meet you, drop in and say hi…..

For those of you who were ever worried about trying jewellery on in the first room of the gallery and it dropping and falling down through the the cracks in the floorboards….(I know I was!) this practical person, Josh, has now put ply down over the boards…..2nd advantage is that cold that used to come up through the floor is no more! Why didn’t I think of that? Hmmm…..

Thanks to all the people who replied to my post asking for a jewellery workshop… the perfect thing has come along, a recently retired jeweller/ watchmaker is selling me his entire workshop…. It’s going to be like selling one workshop and getting another….😂
I’m also getting an opal cutting/ cabbing machine so I can cut my own stones…….
Don’t get rid of me that easy…..!

Looking to buy!

I knew something was up when I went out a few weeks back and bought a bunch of lovely Lightning Ridge opals. Only trouble was I didnt have anything to do with them. Now being without a workshop to make things, a gallery to sell them in and, small matter, very little skills to turn the stones into jewellery, what would I do with them? All I knew was that I wanted them, to make something with them, I don’t think I was quite finished with creating things, and after having many new designs pop into my head over the last month I realised creativity is not something that you can just switch off, it’s a way of life, how you see the world.
So with that said I am going to learn some jewellery making skills, which brings me to the point of this post.

COMING SOON !

This is Josh, he’s the guy taking over the Talisman Gallery. Amongst his many skills he is a blacksmith/ artist and jeweller and I can’t wait to see his work.
I walked into the workshop the other day and had to think “Is this my old place?” there was so much space, everything had been changed around and there was such a feeling of something new! I guess you’ve got to make space for all that creativity….
Speaking of creativity, all you budding blacksmiths and want-to be knife makers out there (including you girls) will be excited to hear that Josh is going to be running classes so stay tuned to this page for info….. feel free to register your interest on the DM page
Josh will also be crafting some of my old mirror designs as well as designing some of his own unique designs so keep your eye out for that too
