As a florist, I have always struggled with the word artist.
The other night, I was at an art show when an artist whose work I absolutely admired asked me, “Are you an artist?” I found myself dancing around the answer.
I told her a little about my story and what I do. I explained that when I’m not designing with flowers for beautiful weddings and events, I’m drawing them, dreaming about them, and visualising them.
I can see them, feel them, and imagine it all coming to life.
That’s the process for me. It’s a feeling, a vision, an impulse—something that’s hard to explain.
I told her I dabble in drawing, resin, painting, clay, upholstery, and renovating my home.
She smiled and said, “Darling, you’re an artist. Own it.”
Then tonight, I was showing a friend and fellow artist some of what I call my silly little drawings.
She said, “These are fun. You should totally do something with these.”
Soooo, while I’m feeling brave, I thought I would share some of my silly little drawings with you.
Starting with the beautiful Jaz, followed by the beautiful Rhedell, and my beautiful cousin Ellie, who was my first muse.
From there, I’m always sketching arrangements and installations, dreaming up tablescapes and ceremony designs.
Often, the process starts with a drawing. Before bringing something to life, it helps me visualise it and connect with how I want it to feel.
I’m still getting used to the word artist, though.
And I still think my drawings are a little silly.
