This week we’re venturing off the beaten path. We’re throwing out the rules of conventional wine and delving into something interesting. Between Five Bells is a partnership between negociant David Fesq and Ray Nadeson from Lethbridge wines in Geelong, Victoria. They’ve partnered to make delicious, fresh, textural wines that push the boundaries. Interesting blends, skin contact, minimal sulphur, amazing spectrum of flavours and killer labels.

These are wines you have to try to experience their quality and uniqueness. Which is why we’re getting them open this week at Emerald Lakes Cellars, so come and join us Friday 5pm to 7pm to have your minds, and taste buds, blown!

We’ve got a special one this week. Bubbles. They’ve captivated drinkers since the 17th century representing fun, sophistication and celebration. And what a line up; a Tasmanian classic that always delivers, the #1 rated sparkling in the 2025 James Halliday guide, serious value Champagne and Penfolds take on the great region. Come and join us, usual place 5pm to 7pm.

Jim Barry is an outstanding producer from Clare Valley making some of the regions benchmark wines. They boast the top selling Riesling in Australia, they have some of the most sought after vineyards in Clare including the Florita Vineyard for Riesling and the Armagh Vineyard for Shiraz. They’re family owned and they own most of the vineyards going into their label, giving them complete control on the quality. They’ve also managed to get Assrytiko in the ground, the first in Australia, and make a sensational example of this Greek variety.

Its our Friday night tasting this week at Emerald Lakes Cellars, come and join us between 5pm and 7pm to come and experience these wines.

Viognier is an often overlooked grape. But its such a great option, particularly for food matching. Its got texture, spice with a full body but still remarkably fresh and vibrant. This week our wine of the week is the Yalumba Eden Valley Viognier. Yalumba has long been a champion of this grape variety; they were the first ones to have this variety in the ground in Australia and they make some of the greatest Viognier wines showing freshness and finesse whilst keeping all of the weight and texture.

Viognier comes from the Northern Rhone Valley, where it gets blended into the great wines of Côte Rôtie or goes into the varietal wine of Condrieu. Its mostly made without the use of oak so if you’re looking for a fuller bodied wine without oak contact, this is an outstanding option to try.

Yalumba have generously supplied us with Magnums of the incredible Bush Vine Grenache to give away with the purchase of six bottles from the Samuel’s Collection range. We have their Eden Valley Viognier and Bush Vine Grenache which can be included in the six.

Come and try it this week at Emerald Lakes Cellars, its open all week!

‘The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.’ Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

As broken down in poetic detail by the modern stoic, Ryan Holiday, in his best selling book, The Obstacle Is The Way, the above quote lays foundation for many battles, both big and small since being written down by the great emperor in AD170. Tom Keelan, is a story of precisely this challenge. Being asked by the large wine companies to grow alternative grape varieties on his land, only to have his contracts dropped with no notice once the vines had finally reached maturity. There would have been tears. There would have been thoughts of quitting, walking away. Enough of this farming, its all too hard.

But the challenge became the solution. Start a wine company, specialise in these alternative grapes that are producing exceptional fruit. Call it The Pawn Wine Co. to highlight this battle and take the fight to big business wine companies. And above all that, make sensational wines.

These wines are exceptional. They have freshness, detail, varietal expression and are just stunning. You need to try them!

So lets get them open for our Friday tasting, 5pm to 7pm.

Yalumba have generously supplied us with Magnums of the incredible Bush Vine Grenache to give away with the purchase of six bottles from the Samuel’s Collection range. We have their Eden Valley Viognier and Bush Vine Grenache which can be included in the six.

Both of these wines show stunning fruit quality, they’re expressive and match so well with food, that rarely can I find things they don’t match with. They both display the commitment Yalumba has to vine age, site selection, quality winemaking and championing these particular varieties.

So therefore it made sense to have the Grenache is our wine of the week. Its fragrant and perfumed showing bright rose petals, fresh raspberries, pot pourri, talc powder. The palate is medium bodied and juicy. Medium chalky tannins which sit on the side of the palate whilst the flowers and red fruit fight for dominance for what seems like ages. A delicious wine showing tension and perfume.

Come and try it this week at Emerald Lakes Cellars, its open all week!

A damn good drink was the mantra of Bob Oatley. Clear, focussed, precise. A good wine should be well made, show a sense of place, respecting the grape variety and the soil its grown on. It needs to be delicious. The Robert Oatley Signature Series, made by winemaker Larry Cherubino, deliver. They’re made from diverse regions around the country and put together by the winemaking team with a focus for the grapes and the regions to shine through. And they’re delicious and drive serious value.

Come and experience them for yourselves, this Friday at Emerald Lakes Cellars, 5pm to 7pm. Decide for yourself if they’re a damn good drink, I think they are.

Wirra Wirra, I’m a big fan. At each level, whether their top wines of RSW Shiraz and Angelus Cabernet or the trusty Church Block, you can expect precision, value and a sense of their place. They sensibly make wines from adjacent regions of McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills, working both their own vineyards and those of trusted growers.

The 12th Man Chardonnay is a great example of their commitment to excellence. Quality fruit managed through the winemaking process by Emma Wood and her team to deliver a fruit focussed but textural and complete Chardonnay. Fermented and matured in 500l oak puncheons with lees contact, the wine has been allowed to fill out but retain freshness.

Its our wine of the week, so come and experience this excellent example of Adelaide Hills Chardonnay this week until Saturday.

Wines of exceptional quality and value, first in the ground in Margaret River and with Virginia Willcock as winemaker, Vasse Felix has a lot going for it. The Filius Cabernet Merlot is our wine of the week this week and gives great insight into this benchmark producer at exceptional value. A blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, it’s designed to be an earlier drinking style and it really delivers on a silky, soft palate, ripe and plush tannin and a stunning mix of dark and red fruit, soft spice and some rich savoury notes. A great wine that really over delivers!

Sometimes you need to take risks. That’s living. There’s plenty that will tell you you’re too old, too young, risks are too high and a litany of other excuses. Sydney Hamilton planted Leconfield when he was 76 years old after a career as a wine maker spanning 60 years. There would have been plenty of resistance from family, friends, colleagues and peers asking why and trying to dilute the dream. Fast forward to today, where we have a stunning Cabernet Sauvignon to enjoy from mature vines, grown on the famed terra rosa soil of the Coonawarra, and we get his vision. Sydney got to make his last vintage in 1981, made a smashing red wine which would have been THE wine of his celebrated career.

And it didn’t stop there. Nephew Richard Hamilton took over the property and, along with the winemaking team, are innovating and pushing the boundaries of what Coonawarra can produce. The Cabernet Sauvignon is stunning but what really impressed me were the Blanc de Blanc bubbles, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and old vine Riesling. So lets get them open. Friday, usual time of 5pm to 7pm.

We definitely need to have more fun. Wine can clearly be charged with being a little serious and we need to remember, its a fun product, best shared with people and good times. The Innocent Bystander range embraces this; focus on the fun, keep the prices friendly and the wine juicy and delicious. They even teamed up with Red Rock Deli and a… Chipellier to match chips with their wine. Like we need encouragement as we put our feet up at the end of the week. I’m in. Chips and all. Now where’s the Pinot?

It's our wine of the week, so come into Emerald Lakes Cellars to try a sample, along with some crisps and see what the good times are all about!

So who likes a G&T? Well, me too. And since we’re in Gold Coast, we may as well be trying Australian Distilling Co’s Gold Coast Gin. With soft notes of lychee and lime it really encapsulates the sunshine and beaches we’ve come to love. So, lets get it in the glasses this Saturday 3pm to 6pm at Emerald Lakes Cellars. We’ll have G&T’s to taste in store, so come and see us and enjoy Gold Coast in a glass!
