𝐴𝑛𝑖𝑔𝑜𝑧𝑎𝑛𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑠 ℎ𝑦𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑑𝑎 (kangaroo paw) is flowering now at Cranbourne Gardens.

Birds love the nectar rich flowers of kangaroo paws. In the Australian Garden at Cranbourne, they attract New Holland Honey-eaters, Eastern Spine-bills, Little Wattle birds, and Red Wattle birds. You can often see them balanced on the tall wiry stems from the red sand garden observation deck.

Flower stems can reach a striking 2 m tall and will flower from early spring throughout summer. They make a long-lasting cut flower and hold their shape when dried. The taller varieties are more adaptable to Victoria's climate than the dwarf varieties and have great ornamental payoff for such little maintenance.

This cultivar will do well in most soil types from moist to dry and is surprisingly adaptable to heavy soils. It needs a sunny spot to grow a prolific flower display. Cut it back to the ground once a year after flowering, to keep it tidy and encourage new growth.

A number of our Anigozanthos cultivars were donated by horticulturalist and plant breeder Angus Stewart for a Kangaroo Paw festival held at Cranbourne Gardens to celebrate the release of his new colour varieties.

Many of the Kangaroo Paws on display in the Australian Garden at Cranbourne are hybrids that have been cultivated and selected by plant breeders. The wild species of 𝐴𝑛𝑖𝑔𝑜𝑧𝑎𝑛𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑠 𝑓𝑙𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑢𝑠 is endemic to the southwest corner of Western Australia.
