In Canada, the wood frog (Rana sylvatica) has a remarkable winter strategy. It can freeze solid, with its heart and breathing stopping entirely. When temperatures rise, it thaws out and quietly resumes its normal life, no drama, just one of nature’s more understated survival feats.

The walking palm, Socratea exorrhiza, is native to the rainforests of Central and South America, including Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama and Colombia.

Here’s the strange part. It doesn’t just stand still. With its spindly, stilt-like roots, it can slowly “walk” toward better sunlight. As new roots grow toward brighter light and older ones die off, the tree subtly shifts position over time, just a few centimetres a year.

Did you know Mount Everest is not actually the tallest mountain on Earth? 🏔️

That title belongs to Mauna Kea. Measured from its base on the Pacific Ocean floor to its summit, Mauna Kea rises over 10,000 metres, with more than 4,000 metres hidden underwater. Everest, by comparison, is the highest mountain above sea level, reaching just under 9,000 metres.

Everest wins on altitude. Mauna Kea wins on sheer size. Geography loves a technicality.

Did you know hippos can’t actually swim? 🦛

Despite spending most of their lives in water, hippos are too dense to float. Their bodies are packed with heavy bones, so instead of swimming, they walk, run, or bounce along the riverbed. They push off the bottom, glide for a moment, then touch down again, like underwater moonwalkers.
